I have been trying to find out what exactly is the difference (besides running time of course), between the album and single version. Is it a completely different recording, a different mix, or do they have different overdubs etc? I get the impression from my largely unsuccessful attempts to find info on this on the net, that the single is not merely an edit of the album version.

Only their hairdresser knows for sure.[IMG] I like the even longer live version on the backpack looking album.

I don't think it's a different recording (I'm not their hairdresser) but you can't get the single just by editing out parts of the long version (I was hoping to do that when I made a 60s-early 70s compilation and had only the long version). As I recall, the beginning of the single isn't on the long version; most likely, it (the beginning) is an alternate mix (without the backing instruments) of a part of the long version, as best as I could figure out.
