I love The Bends and OK Computer. I tried to wrap my head around Kid A and Insomniac and just couldn't dig them completely. I think there are moments of brilliance on both, like National Anthem, Morning Bell, and Everything In Its Right Place, but the albums don't gel. Sometimes, the structure is sacrificed too much for atmosphere or experimentation.
Taking the stronger bits from both would have been a phenomenal album.
But, since they're making new and relevant material and Floyd is not, I've been listening to them much more. Given my musical tastes in general, one would think I would be a huge Floyd fan, but I'm not. I like their peak material (Meddle-Wall) OK, but never became a fan.
The idea of Tool as the "new Floyd" is an interesting one- both were/are extremely popular, both feature stunning musicianship, and their detractors are amongst the most vicious in rock. That is, both have that "love them or hate them" quality.
The big difference is that I absolutely adore Tool.
