Got to spend a day with him around 35 years ago at the Gene Autry Museum. He was fun, and I had been warned that he loved the old Charlie Chan movies and that was what he would want to talk about — And did he ever. Fortunately, at the time I knew those movies pretty well. We had a great day.

I didn’t realize until I read his obituary that he lived less than a mile away from me in a small town that’s part of the same incorporated township as my own. Apparently he liked to relax on his front porch wearing his cowboy hat, and if I had just driven a few blocks in the other direction I could’ve seen him. Small world!

I hope his show Sugarfoot sees a bluray release or ends up on streaming

I’m currently working my way through the review copy of the Cheyenne show from Warner Archive and some of the episodes include sneak peeks of upcoming Sugarfoot episodes, which is making me wish for the same thing. I’ll gladly review it if WA puts it out.

My favorite role of his is when he was Curtis Murdoch, the somewhat religious father of a little girl (played by Kim Richards) who at first didn't want her to be treated for possible rabies from a dog bite, but eventually gave in, only to have the vaccine be no longer needed, in the third-season Emergency! episode "How Green Was My Thumb?" (OAD Saturday, January 26, 1974 on NBC)...

Interesting actor, he had his own style, and a personality kind of like Will Rogers.
Incidentally, I have the Complete Emergency box set and watched that very episode a while back, and Hutchins was excellent in it!
