Jones got a relatively late start acting, after spending the early part of his working life as a bus driver. He started acting seriously in the mid-eighties, and was a fixture in the New York City theater scene starting in the mid-nineties.
His breakout role on television came in 2016, as William Hill on "This Is Us". Hill, the long-absent biological father of Sterling K. Brown's character, was only a series regular for the first season, but still made a huge impact throughout the series.
He leaves behind a daughter, actress Jasmine Cephas Jones.
