The character actor, best known as Michael Corleone's bodyguard and enforcer, Al Neri, in all three Godfather films, and whose distinctive features made him recognizable in numerous other character roles, was struck and killed by a bus in his Manhattan neighborhood on Saturday, 2/18/06. He was 68.

I always felt that the Neri character was the one that could have been most easily elucidated in the films. If you read the book, you learn a lot about him. In the films (without having read the book), you really don't understand who it is. And really, it would have taken only one line from the book to make it so much more clear to the film audience. Which is when Vito tells Michael that now he's found his Luca Brasi, which is basically who Al Neri is. My understanding of that character in all 3 films is much better after I read the book, something I would recommend to any fan of the films.

Yeah, he just shows up in the movie when Michael goes to visit Mo Green. After reading the book, him dressing up as a cop when he guns down Barzini takes on a whole new meaning.

That's a very sad death for anyone and at too young an age. He was a very distinctive character actor. Last time I saw him, I think, was in The Sopranos.

Of course he will always be Al Neri, indeed.

Sad. Any pics anywhere of this guy? I have not seen the Godfather movies in years and I can't remember what he looked like. Nothing on imdb.com.
