Eighty Nine years is a long life and she was clearly a beautiful and accomplished woman yet I am still saddened by yet another unexpected loss. We've lost some serious star power over the past several weeks.

Her and Bill Russell on the same day. Brutal.

She participated in an AMA on Reddit some years back, before she was stricken with dementia, and she was asked about the rumor that Martin Luther King Jr. had convinced her to stay on "Star Trek":

many a young mans first Sci Fi crush,

got the chance to meet her once 1986 in Chicago a memory that I hold dear, at a convention, and she took the stage and started singing with the voice of an angel. Acapella, the entire room was enraptured, then began just conversations with the crowd, Not questions and answers, but actual conversations about , Trek, her time at NASA, growing up in the Chicago area. What an amazing person!

RIP.

There’s been quite an outpouring of praise for her portayal of Uhura and her work to recruit people of color and woman for NASA. I saw Whoopi Goldberg on The View speak of how seeing Nichelle on Star Trek in her youth was quite the inspiration for her. It’s nice to see that from so many people and media outlets.

Growing up in pre-revolution Tehran, we used to watch many shows on the B&W American Channel there, which was set up for the sizeable English-speaking foreign workforce there during that period.

Nichelle Nichols as Uhura, Diahann Carroll as Julia, and several regulars on Sesame Street were my first exposure to African Americans.

That these portrayals were so natural and understated made the multi-racial aspect a non-issue for this kid half a world away.

[We also used to watch Blondie, Gentle Ben and The Andy Griffith Show on that channel - shows that I’ve not seen since then, going back some 50 years now.]

English language was a struggle for me then, but thankfully Star Trek was also dubbed for the regular Farsi channel, so it was a massive part of my childhood and that of my peers.

The concept of an integrated planet Earth seeking to discover and welcome new civilisations into this ever-expanding community called The Federation, played a huge role in shaping my worldview then, and of possibilities about how things could and should be now.

So, while I fully join the chorus here in applauding Nichelle Nichols for the inspirational role she played in raising the status and profile of her own community from a racial and cultural standpoint, I am personally indebted to her for being a vital part of that visionary ensemble that so profoundly impacted my life, helping to reinforce my conviction about humanity’s essential oneness.

Hardly a rumor. She's been relaying that info for decades.

A heroine to many - a leader - an innovator - a CLASS ACT - Dear Lord let flights of Angels escort her to eternity. May She Rest In Peace!
