Oscar winning character actress Mercedes McCambridge died today at 85. She was nominated for Oscar twice in her long career, winning for her role of Sadie Burke in 1949's All The King's Men. Today she is best remembered for playing the voice of the demon Pizuzu in The Exorcist, and as the seriously butch cattle rancher Emma Small in the lesbian icon film, Johnny Guitar.

She seemed to be typed as seriously butch...Touch of Evil (1958) had her as a gang member, and then there was Luz in Giant (1956).

Boy, you're right about that. I didn't even remember those other rolls until you pointed them out. I just watched "Johnny Guitar" recently, and she was superb in it.

    Another great loss.

I just got a 16 of ALL THE KINGS MEN a couple of weeks ago and was reminded of her terrific talent. Her reaction after John Ireland smacks her is priceless (OWwwwWow!...weh-hell...!).
