Last month I purchased a the Sony 4K HDR 75X900E television and the Samsung 4K HDR UBD-M9500 player. I kept my Pioneer VSX AV 1131 receiver.
I have the Samsung player connected by HDMI 2.2 to my receiver and from the receiver by HDMI 2.2 to my television. What has happened a couple of times is that the receiver gets locked in PCM mode. By this I mean that if I play a 4K disc or blu-ray and choose say DTS MA or Dolby Digital 5.1 when they are sound options for that particular disc the receiver stays in PCM mode. I know this because on the display of the Pioneer it shows PCM but the red lettering display of DTS or DD is not showing.
The only way I can get back to DTS or DD is by playing a blu-ray that has the option of say DD 5.1 and PCM 5.1 on my old blu-ray player, choose one of the digital sound options and then play it on my Samsung 4K player. Anyone else have this issue?
I remember years ago with my old Sony AV receiver the only way I could play a disc that had PCM 5.1 was to disable the bitstream and choose the PCM connection.
For today's 4K players such as the Samsung player that I assume that the sound is no longer sent to the AV receiver by bitstream.
Thanks in advance for any comments.

There should be an option on your Samsung UHD player for either decoding the sound formats in the player or sending it to your AVR for processing. If it's set to process in the Samsung player, then the signal will be sent to the Pioneer AVR as PCM.
