for some reason i am unable to get my direct tv signal which is inputted to the receiver (using hdmi and optical line) transferred out of the receiver using the digital output of cd-r to another receiver. that receiver doesnt recognize any signal coming from the yamaha digital output of cd-r?

also no signal going out of the audio of vcr out (analog) when listening to direct tv but there is signal when listening to radio or using my wii (composite and analog input to receiver)

Is your direct tv receiver set to output an optical signal? Check that its not outputting through HDMI. Also, can you just run audio from the Direct TV output to the second receiver and bypass the 3800? I'm not familiar with the cd-r in/outputs, but it seems a little strange to go that route anyway.

Do you have the direct TV also going through a VCR? I believe one output is taking precedence over the other.

Look on page 22 of your RX-V3800 manual and you will see the signal path options through the 3800.

As with most receivers, audio paths are unique to a connection type -- in other words if you want to output audio from the receiver's analog RCA jacks, you must input audio to analog RCA jacks. The one extra the 3800 provides is that digital signals INPUT at EITHER the digital coax or optical inputs appear at the optical outputs. So if you could run an optical cable from one of the Toslink outs of the 3800 to an optical input of the other receiver you should be OK.

For video, input signals from composite, component, and S-video inputs can be output to any video ouput type including HDMI; a change in type of connection from input to output requires video conversion to be enabled in the 3800. As usual to avoid bypassing HDCP copy protection, signals input on HDMI can only be output on HDMI.

The diagrams on page 22 of the manual show this more clearly than I can explain it :)
