I think you misunderstand the purpose of fiber optic (Optical, Toslink) cables. They don't go to the speakers. Speaker wire goes to the speakers, from the receiver. A single optical cable goes from the dvd player, or cable/sat box, to the receiver, for 5.1/6.1 surround.

Almost any receiver out there, that supports Dolby Digital. Just make sure it has optical inputs. If you want suggestions for specific brand and model of receiver, you need to tell us how much you want to spend, and what you want to hookup to it.

A speaker is made up of 1 or more transducers (the actual drivers). In this case the transducer converts electrical energy to mechanical energy. Ed gives you great information on how to use the optical cable. What he didn't tell you is that there is no way for an optical cable to carry electrical energy and therefore no way for it to interface into a speaker and work properly.
