I have a subwoofer in a room, where the next room over are my townhome stairs, then the neighbor next to me has a bedroom on the other side of the stairs. Now, the subwoofer is on the wall closest to the stairs, if i place that behind me goign away from the stairs on the wall in back of me in my room, will that reduce the bass they will hear, or would it have to be a completley new room?

Maybe you can talk to the neighbors and ask them if you can try both setups to see which one will benefit each of you? Set up the sub, turn on your system to your listening level, and go down and see what it sounds like in their bedroom. Then try the setup with the sub against the other wall? Just a suggestion....
