I have a Pioneer Elite that have 5.1 channels but have the compatability to do rear channel and 7.1 but I need a external amp. Now can't I just use a reguler stereo receievr to drive the rear channel or do I need a prologic reciver to drive the 1 rear speaker.

You do not need a ProLogic receiver. Your Pioneer has already done the processing. A monoblock or stereo amp or receiver will be fine.

To match the same "character" of the amps in your receiver I suggest buying a Pioneer Elite M-10X two channel amplifier. It can also be set up so that it automatically turns off and on with the receiver.
