Ok, I was having a discussion with a friend of mine about progressive scan and he said that it's no longer necessary to have 3:2 pulldown on a dvd player as it is on newer TVs. Is that information correct?

I remember alot of discussion about players that weren't "real" progressive scan players because they didn't do the 3:2 pulldown. do players like that still exist or are the $200 players that advertise progressive scan capabilities the real deal?

I think what your friend was trying to say was that you don't need a progressive scan player because the line doubling circuitry in newer TVs does as good a job. He's right that line doubling circuitry has gotten better; he's wrong that it beats a good progressive scan player. It's a question of degree. Here are links to some recent discussions:
