Despite what you may be thinking, this is a serious movie question.
I just watched Operation Petticoat, and it raised a question for me.
Anatomy of a Murder came out in 1959, and according to a book by Peter Bogdanovich, the use of the word 'panties' was the first in a Hollywood film. I don't know if this is true, but they certainly make a big deal of it in the movie.
So, I'm watching Operation Petticoat which came out that same year, and Tony Curtis just throws out a line about 'bras & panties', and no one blinks.
Could the taboo breaking in Anatomy have led to such a casual no big deal usage in Petticoat that quickly? Or was it really not such a big deal like Anatomy made out?
Just wondering.
