Lately, I've been getting bombarded by these TRULY annoying pop-up ads that seemingly pop-up independent of my browsing activities.

A normal window will suddenly appear, with a title bar reading "Messanger Service" and a text message in the body of the window.

Anyone know how to get rid of this new annoying kid on the block?

    Thanks in advance.

Oh man, I've been getting those for months and they are truly horrendous. If I leave my PC on overnight I'll have 10+ by the morning. Any info on how to block these demon pop-ups would be appreciated!

If you're running XP, goto Control Panel, select "Administrative Tools", then choose Services.

Find the "Messenger" service & select properties, and change the "Startup Type" to manual or disabled.

That one didn't work for me, Brian, but my firewall sure did!

Yep, for some reason the firewall built into XP is disabled by default. Turning it on stopped those messages for me. Why the firewall software I pay for doesn't stop them is another issue.

Download xp antispy at http://www.xp-antispy.org/ and uninstall messenger completely IF you dont need it. Its a very useful tool just to get rid alot of other garbage too in Win XP.

    Michael

I only started getting this kind of pop-up two days ago. I erroneously ASSumed that they must have been some kind of brand spankin' new form of pop-up.

Instinctively, I went to HTF because of the quality of the membership and such for my answer. [IMG]

I use a pop-up suppressor on Norton Firewall that seems to do the trick.
