Under the special features section for Ikiru on the Criterion site (see URL below) there is a documentary listed, as follows:

A Message from Akira Kurosawa (2000) a 90-minute documentary produced by Kurosawa productions and featuring interviews with the director on the set of his later films.

I was just wondering if any other Kurosawa fans have heard of this documentary and if anyone has seen it? It sounds intriguing, to say the least.

You left out the other special features.

New high-definition digital transfer, with restored image and sound

Audio commentary by Stephen Prince, author of The Warrior’s Camera: The Cinema of Akira Kurosawa

A 41-minute documentary on Ikiru from the series, Akira Kurosawa: To Create is Beautiful, including interviews with Akira Kurosawa, writer Hideo Oguni, actor Takashi Shimura, and many others

    Original theatrical trailer

New and improved English subtitle translation

Optimal image quality: RSDL dual-layer edition

wow is all I can say. Another jewel in the crown is released.

Is this going to be all on one disc or two? 131 minutes of documentary sounds like a lot to be on just one in addition to Ikiru's 143 run time.

It'll definitely be a two disc set, with the film on the first and the two documentaries on the second. I doubt Criterion would dare to try and compress 4 1/2 hours on a single disc!

What kind of transfer can we expect on this title? The HomeVision VHS tape -- if that is any indication -- is quite poor in both video and audio quality. Perhaps the original elements are not in the best condition. If that is the case, I wouldn't expect something on the incredible level of "Hidden Fortress." Perhaps the best that can be done is something on the level of "Seven Samurai."

Stephen Prince is the same person who gave that brilliant commentary for Straw Dogs. One of the best I've ever heard [IMG]

The transfer is definitely going to better than a VHS tape, judging from Criterion's past efforts. Though how much better I don't know.

I can't believe this is finally happening!
