Well folks, got this bit of news off my FB feed where I follow Actress Kelli Maroney and she's just announced that they start filming this summer on a remake of the SciFi classic Queen Of Outer Space (1958). It is being produced by Jim Wynorski and features 80s teen hearthrob Kelli Maroney (aka Kelli Maroney Ulin, Fast Times At Ridgemont High (1982), Night Of The Comet (1984), Chopping Mall (1986)) in the Zsa Zsa Gabor role. No word yet if fellow NOTC alum Catherine Mary Stewart will appear but she'd be a perfect fit for the evil Queen.

Not to start a big discussion of the remake itself or remake vs. original other than to say this doesn't seem to be a major studio production and that Jim Wynorski wants to keep it retro and true to the spirit of the original. That's for a different forum. But I do wonder if this project will enhance chances of a Blu-ray release of the original? We'll probably get a release of the remake but a Blu release of the original would be absolutely awesome.

I think we'd be getting the original from the Archive regardless.

Gotta say, I'm annoyed that they used so many Forbidden Planet props in this one. The crew uniforms, the blasters, even Anne Francis' dress. Sheesh.

I love all the FORBIDDEN PLANET bric-a-brac, costumes and props in QUEEN OF OUTER SPACE. It gives the film that camped-out, bargain basement look, like there's these big quotation marks around every shot. And unlike WORLD WITHOUT END, I think some of the campiness of QUEEN IF OUTER SPACE was done on purpose.

Yep, if you saw FP before QOOS, you couldn't miss those prop reuses. I did note that we saw the weapons used only twice in QOOS and didn't have those cool purple "blaster bolts" that FP did.

As an eight-year-old, I saw QUEEN OF OUTER SPACE on a triple bill with ONE-EYED JACKS and THE FABULOUS JULES VERNE (the mind boggles!) with a theater filled with kids. (We'd all gotten coupons from local stores and paid 25 cents a ticket.) It was the grand reopening of a theater that normally showed Italian and Greek movies. (I remember seeing the poster for ROCCO AND HIS BROTHERS there, a film I'd finally see in graduate school 30 years later!) QUEEN OF OUTER SPACE was easily the crowd favorite of the three films. (Can you imagine an audience of kids sitting through ONE-EYED JACKS?) They gave us free popcorn and had a raffle--my 6-year-old sister won a toy bake set. After six hours in the theater, there was so much pent-up energy that a free-for-all erupted in the foyer between the lobby and the outside area of the theater--it was a cramped space and the idiot ushers hadn't kept the doors open so we could easily exit. I got sucked into it and trampled. Saturday at the movies in 1962.
