THE FBI SEASON 6

Episode #18

“Eye of the Needle”
written by Robert Heverly
directed by Virgil W. Vogel
cinematography by William W. Spencer
guests: Richard Kiley, Coleen Gray, Michael Baseleon, Robert Yuro, Jerry Ayres, George Wallace, Richard Roat, Byron Keith, Lynnette Mettey, Vince Howard, Tari DeMeyer, William Toomey, Leo G. Morrell

EXTORTION

It’s an engrossing survival entry treated like a failed kidnapping attempt turned manhunt in the high mountain. Find the second mountain adventure with a rifle man after “The Savage Wilderness”, also directed by Virgil W. Vogel. The helicopter is back, led by Inspector Erskine who wears casual cowboy clothes as well as Colby. In a way, the chased and stripped of equipment character played by Richard Kiley is a kind of proto-Rambo who recycles a dirty knife from a wreck and fights his predator. The script is penned by story consultant Robert Heverly. The third ritual is omitted. The prologue, Act 1, Act 2, Act 3 and Act 4 are tracked with Duane Tatro’s echoplexed trumpet cue from the score “Incident in the Desert” to highlight the chase scenes. The cast of the high mountain heavies is good: Michael Baseleon, Robert Yuro.

QM actors notes: Richard Kiley guests in some QM productions like The FBI (3), Incident in San Francisco and Cannon.

Returning guest actors: Richard Kiley (the season 3 “Homecoming”), Michael Baseleon (the season 5 “Pressure Point”), Robert Yuro (the season 5 “Silent Partner”), Jerry Ayres (the season 5 “Gamble with Death”), George Wallace (the season 2 “Ordeal”), Richard Roat (the season 4 “A Life in the Balance”), Byron Keith (the season 4 “The Flaw”), Vince Howard (the season 4 “A Life in the Balance”).

THE FBI SEASON 6

Episode #19

“The Fatal Connection”
written by Ed Waters
directed by Nicholas Webster
cinematography by William W. Spencer
guests: Andrew Duggan, Scott Marlowe, Sorrell Booke, Dana Elcar, Gary Crosby, Barbara Billingsley, Charles Bateman, John Findlater, Barbara Davis, James MacKrell, Joseph Mell, Jerry Fitzpatrick, Bert Russell, Al Travis

INTERSTATE TRANSPORTATION IN AID OF RACKETEERING, EXTORTION, INTERSTATE TRANSPORTATION OF STOLEN VEHICLE

It’s a very average mystery about corruption that focuses on a contract that starts out with a failed assassination attempt on an old crime reporter with an uninteresting loser henchmen. Too bad that they waste the talent of actor Scott Marlowe who used to have better parts on The FBI and quickly ends up in the office of Inspector Erskine as a convict in blue costume. Notice a very cheap moto chase sequence on rear projection. The third ritual is omitted. The cast of the heavies is hardly exciting: Scott Marlowe, Sorrell Booke, Dana Elcar.

QM actors notes: Andrew Duggan used to be the regular character of Major Gen. Ed Britt on the last two seasons of 12 O’Clock High and guests in some QM series like The Fugitive (2), The Invaders, The FBI (4), Cannon (3), The Streets of San Francisco (2), Barnaby Jones, The Manhunter.

Returning guest actors: Andrew Duggan (the season 3 “The Traitor”), Scott Marlowe (the season 5 “Blood Tie”), Dana Elcar (the season 4 “The Young Warriors”), Charles Bateman (the season 4 “The Runaways”), James MacKrell (the season 6 “The Condemned”), Joseph Mell (the season 1 “The Man Who Went Mad by Mistake”), Bert Russell (the season 2 “The Courier”).

THE FBI SEASON 6

Episode #20

“The Replacement”
written by Gerald Sanford
directed by Philip Abbott
cinematography by William W. Spencer
guests: Phyllis Thaxter, Peter Brandon, Charles Korvin, Richard Davalos, Anthony Eisley, Elizabeth Berger, Phil Dean, John Trayne, George Skaff, Paul Hahn, John Damler, John Kroger, Dennis Robertson, John Mayo

ESPIONAGE

It’s a budget-less and adequate remake/rework of the fancy season 3 “Counter-Stroke” (also written by Gerald Sanford) and a veiled bitter love story between two mature Soviet agents: just replace Kevin McCarthy and Jessica Walter by Charles Korvin and Phyllis Thaxter. This is the third and last Inspector Erskine goes undercover adventure and he poses as foreign spy Eric Cross (with a mustache, a scarface, smoking the pipe) to replace a top operative called Constantine—a woman named Valerie Hendricks with a brain tumor—whose front is an art gallery but things don’t go as planned. One amusing detail to notice: Colby sends a federal secretary—and a newbie—posing as a stewardess to deliver a message to Erskine in his hotel room while a Soviet agent interrogates him. The third ritual is omitted. First episode directed by co-star Philip Abbott.

QM actors notes: Phyllis Thaxter guests in some QM productions like The Fugitive, The FBI (3), The Invaders, Incident in San Francisco, Cannon, Barnaby Jones.

Returning guest actors: Phyllis Thaxter (the season 3 “The Traitor”), Peter Brandon (the season 5 “The Doll Courier”), Charles Korvin (the season 4 “The Butcher”), Anthony Eisley (the season 6 “Unknown Victim”), Phil Dean (the season 6 “The Inheritors”), Paul Hahn (the season 5 “Blood Tie”), John Kroger (the season 6 “Time Bomb”), John Mayo (the season 6 “The Target”).

Episode #21

“Death Watch”
written by Robert Heverly
directed by Robert Douglas
cinematography by Jack Swain
guests: Glenn Corbett, Diane Keaton, Richard Jaeckel, Angel Tompkins, Len Wayland, Steve Sandor, Solomon Sturges, Frank Hotchkiss, Bill Vint, Robert Patten, Craig Guenther, Herb Armstrong, Brett Hadley, Douglas Bank, Chuck Taylor

CRIME ON A GOVERNMENT RESERVATION, ASSAULT, THEFT OF GOVERNMENT PROPERTY, CONSPIRACY

It’s a good and large-scale criminal gang entry that focuses more on the robbers than on the political terrorists who are just ruthless customers in the shadow: too bad they don’t develop the theme of the revolutionaries seen in the previous “Time Bomb” and we briefly see two generic militants (actors Steve Sandor and Bill Vint) threatening the head robber at night and then talking over the phone to deal with the delivery and during the night delivery with a third character, ordered to eliminate the robbers. The script is penned by story consultant Robert Heverly that also instills the sub theme of wedding through the two couples: the military (Richard Jaeckel/Angel Tompkins) and the criminal (Glenn Corbett/Diane Keaton). One technical detail to notice: the robbers posing as militaries don’t have clean cut hair. The helicopter is back and led by Inspector Erskine! The third ritual is omitted. The cast of the army automatic rifles robber-mercenaries is good: Glenn Corbett as the leader, Diane Keaton as the girlfriend of the leader, Frank Hotchkiss as the leading young underling, Solomon Sturges as the second young underling that gets caught and Chuck Taylor as the third young underling.

QM actors notes: Glenn Corbett guests in some QM series like 12 O’Clock High (2), The FBI (2), Cannon, The Streets of San Francisco, Barnaby Jones (2), The Manhunter, Caribe, Bert D'Angelo/Superstar.

Returning guest actors: Glenn Corbett (the season 4 “The Widow”), Len Wayland (the season 6 “The Savage Wilderness”), Solomon Sturges (the season 5 “Boomerang”), Robert Patten (the season 6 “The Architect”), Craig Guenther (the season 6 “Incident in the Desert”), Herb Armstrong (the season 6 “Incident in the Desert”).

Episode #22

“Downfall”
written by Shirl Hendryx and Robert Heverly
story by Shirl Hendryx
directed by Virgil W. Vogel
cinematography by Jack Swain
guests: Carl Betz, Anne Archer, Michael Burns, Patricia Donahue, Morgan Jones, Cathleen Cordell, Richard Young, Corinne Conley, Fletcher Allen, James Seay, Arnold Lessing, Frank Farmer

INTERSTATE TRANSPORTATION OF STOLEN PROPERTY, MAJOR THEFT

It’s a basic but still pleasant jewel thief case mixed and complicated by an impossible and romantic young people love story between Anne Archer and Michael Burns that is rejected by a father that orders a hit from an anonymous henchman. The script is penned by story consultant Robert Heverly who seems to work on a template of characters team a la “Death Watch”. The third ritual is omitted. As usual, the guest cast of jewel criminals is satisfying: Carl Betz as a mature former mob enforcer turned official jewelry trader as a legal front but still masters dirty jewelry smuggling, Michael Burns as the young jewel thief underling working as a rooftop cat.

QM actors notes: Carl Betz guests in some QM series like The FBI (2), Cannon, The Streets of San Francisco, Barnaby Jones, Most Wanted.

Returning guest actors: Carl Betz (the season 5 “Boomerang”), Michael Burns (the season 5 “Scapegoat”), Patricia Donahue (the season 2 “Anatomy of a Prison Break”), Morgan Jones (the season 4 “The Runaways”), Fletcher Allen (the season 4 “The Widow”), James Seay (the season 5 “Tug-of-War”).

One of several acting roles he had, before he became the host of the infamous 1990 version of Tic Tac Dough in syndication (the one with the rapping Dragon and Dragonslayer, among other unpopular changes).

THE FBI SEASON 6

Episode #23

“The Hitchhiker”
written by Mark Rodgers
directed by Virgil W. Vogel
cinematography by Jack Swain
guests: Michael Douglas, Donna Mills, Peggy McCay, Skip Ward, Richard Kelton, Forrest Compton, Burke Byrnes, Barry Cahill, Robert Brubaker, John Kroger, John Ward, Jenny Hecht, Wadsworth Taylor, Robert Duggan, Philip Christopher, Bob Golden

BANK ROBBERY, UNLAWFUL FLIGHT TO AVOID PROSECUTION, ATTEMPTED MURDER

It’s a family drama, a fine long trip/manhunt and a good sociological study on that specific time because of the performance of Michael Douglas as the idle and AWOL soldier Jerome Williams on the run who is not a professional criminal but a young man with an existential issue and betrayed by his own brother. The prologue almost starts as the season premiere “The Condemned” when he robs a bank and, later on, Jerome Williams steals the jewels of a merchant that he met on the road and fails to kill him. This is the Seventies era and the bank robber picks up two long hair hippy hitchhikers and, here, played by Donna Mills and Richard Kelton and, later on, the hippie woman asks the help of a long hair biker who happens to be greedy. During the course of the investigation, we learn the background of the hippie woman used by Jerome Williams that belongs to a wealthy family like the young woman in “Time Bomb”. The messy Vasquez Creek outcome shows two federal helicopters to stop two parties: Jerome Williams versus the wild bikers gang! The third ritual is omitted. The music editor tracks cues from Duane Tatro’s “Incident in the Desert”.

QM actors notes: Michael Douglas will become Inspector Steve “Buddy Boy” Keller, one of the two leading characters from The Streets of San Francisco because of this particular part.

Returning guest actors: Peggy McCay (the season 5 “Summer Terror”), Skip Ward (the season 5 “Flight”), Forrest Compton (the season 6 “The Traitor”), Robert Brubaker (the season 1 “The Giant Killer”), John Kroger (the season 6 “The Replacement”), John Ward (the season 5 “Tug-of-War”), Wadsworth Taylor (the season 6 “The Deadly Pact”), Robert Duggan (the season 6 “Escape to Terror”).

And non-QM: Donna Mills would, almost a decade later, be Abby Fairgate Cunningham Ewing Sumner on Knots Landing on CBS starting in season 2 (1980-81), and going to the 10th go (1988-89).

THE FBI SEASON 6

Episode #24

“Turnabout”
written by Don Brinkley
directed by Robert Douglas
cinematography by William W. Spencer
guests: Warren Oates, Joyce Van Patten, Ahna Capri, Berry Kroeger, Barry Russo, Arch Johnson, John Considine, James Gammon, Robert P. Lieb, Joe E. Tata, Tom Stewart, David Brandon, Ray Kellogg

INTERSTATE TRANSPORTATION OF STOLEN PROPERTY

It’s an interesting yet touching country working class sociological look and a couple (Warren Oates, Joyce Van Patten) on the run piece that is triggered by an armored car robbery that turns bad but, actually, it is all about the organized crime: a big shot named Joe Salka (Barry Russo), a truck company man/traveling agent named Leo Conway (Arch Johnson), a hitman named Barney Leeds (Joe E. Tata). The episode plays like Sam Peckinpah’s The Getaway and could also be re-titled Take the Money and Run! The performance of Warren Oates is always a delight. Notice a nice little part of makeup artist by actress Ahna Capri who gently teases Oates and works with an old fake passport maker in an amusement park. The third ritual is omitted.

QM actors notes: Warren Oates guests in some QM series like The Untouchables, The Fugitive (2), 12 O’Clock High, The FBI.

Returning guest actors: Ahna Capri (the season 3 “Crisis Ground”), Barry Russo (the season 5 “Deadfall”), Arch Johnson (the season 4 “The Widow”), John Considine (the season 5 “Fatal Impostor”), Robert P. Lieb (the season 1 “An Elephant Is Like a Rope”), Tom Stewart (the season 6 “The Stalking Horse”), David Brandon (the season 6 “Incident in the Desert”), Ray Kellogg (the season 6 “Antennae of Death”).
