THE FBI SEASON 5

Episode #11

“Scapegoat”
written by Robert Heverly and Edward J. Lakso
story by Edward J. Lakso
directed by Don Medford
cinematography by Gerald Perry Finnerman
music by Richard Markowitz
guests: Michael Burns, Nan Martin, Arthur Franz, Brenda Vaccaro, Harrison Ford, Noah Keen, Brooke Mills, Bob Okazaki, Lincoln Demyan, Lew Elias, Harlan Warde, Joe Stefano

CRIME ON A GOVERNMENT RESERVATION, MURDER

It’s a very intense and engaging study on ordinary evil through a young woman’s killer obsessed by vintage cars entry that is centered around the frantic performance of actor Michael Burns playing the mad son of a wealthy widower that is blackmailed by a dubious waitress (Brenda Vaccaro). It’s more or less a rework on a season 1 episode entitled “How to Murder an Iron Horse”: see the same kind of young man driving a vintage car and living a double life with a widowed mother. Scenes not to miss: the murder of the prologue near a cliff, Inspector Erskine pays many visits to a convict mechanic in jail played by Harrison Ford that is falsely-accused of the murder of a woman that helps him to solve the case and Inspector Erskine eventually tells him he is innocent and free at the State prison’s office which happens to be the most touching moment of this insane narrative. As in “Gamble with Death”, find another character falsely-accused of murder. The music score by Richard Markowitz sustains the drama very well. The cast of the enlarged family consists of Michael Burns as the son, Nan Martin as the mother and widower, Arthur Franz as the future husband.

QM actors notes: Michael Burns guests in some QM series like The FBI (3), The Streets of San Francisco, Barnaby Jones, The Manhunter, Most Wanted. Michael Burns will play another weird serial criminal, along with Brenda Vaccaro, in the season 1 episode “Act of Duty” of The Streets of San Francisco and, in a way, that FBI episode can be seen as its blueprint.

Returning guest actors: Michael Burns (the season 1 “The Forests of the Night”), Nan Martin (the season 4 “The Fraud”), Arthur Franz (the season 3 “Region of Peril”), Harrison Ford (the season 4 “Caesar’s Wife”), Noah Keen (the season 4 “The Fraud”), Bob Okazaki (the season 1 “The Hiding Place”), Lincoln Demyan (the season 2 “Anatomy of a Prison Break”), Harlan Warde (the season 3 “Overload”).

THE FBI SEASON 5

Episode #12

“The Inside Man”
written by Mark Weingart and Norman Hudis
story by Norman Hudis
directed by Gene Nelson
cinematography by William W. Spencer
guests: Lloyd Bochner, Lawrence Dane, Oscar Beregi Jr., Janis Hansen, Clyde Ventura, Dean Harens, William Bramley, Aron Kincaid, Maxine Stuart, Judee Morton, Dennis McCarthy, Elizabeth Lane, Bard Stevens, Lisabeth Field, Steven Michelis

INTERSTATE TRANSPORTATION OF STOLEN PROPERTY, MAJOR THEFT

It’s a rather good, society and existential jewel thieves entry that includes three robberies and a man who looses his position and his world. The script deals with Thomas Hobbes’ theme of survival of the fittest but in the realm of diamond salesmen. The good scenes not to miss: the theft at the station prologue, Lloyd Bochner discovering that his wife cheats him at a party, the message in French told by the airport employee to warn the big jewel merchant. The helicopter is back! The cast of the jewel thieves is good: Lloyd Bochner as the wealthy inside man leader-fence, Lawrence Dane as the leading thief and Clyde Ventura as the empty-headed accomplice.

QM actors notes: Lloyd Bochner guests in some QM series like 12 O’Clock High (3), The FBI, Cannon (2), Barnaby Jones (2), Most Wanted.

Returning guest actors: Lawrence Dane (the season 4 “Wind It Up and It Betrays You”), Oscar Beregi Jr. (the season 2 “List for a Firing Squad”), Janis Hansen (the season 4 “Moment of Truth”), Dean Harens (the season 4 “Moment of Truth”), William Bramley (the season 2 “The Escape”), Maxine Stuart (the season 4 “Caesar’s Wife”), Judee Morton (the season 3 “The Tunnel”), Dennis McCarthy (the season 3 “Southwind”), Elizabeth Lane (the season 5 “The Challenge”).

THE FBI SEASON 5

Episode #13

“The Prey”
written by Don Brinkley
directed by Jesse Hibbs
cinematography by William W. Spencer
guests: Steve Ihnat, Cyril Delevanti, Joanna Moore, Mildred Dunnock, Bettye Ackerman, Paul Fix, C. Lindsay Workman, Rose Hobart, Sam Elliott

TEN MOST WANTED FUGITIVE, INTERSTATE TRANSPORTATION OF STOLEN PROPERTY, MAJOR THEFT

It’s an interesting yet both cynical and corny cat burglar that spots old people entry but the sherry on top is the dual character of Steve Ihnat when it come to con an old lady as posing as an insurance agent. One funny anecdote to notice: the old crippled lady adores going to see wrestling and hitting the fighter! Find a small part of local FBI agent played by a young Sam Elliott. The helicopter is back! The cast of the criminals is good: Steve Ihnat as the cat burglar/con man, Joanna Moore as the sentimental/sensitive accomplice working as a nurse to infiltrate old people’s home. That infiltration of retired people plot will be reworked in the season 1 episode “A Collection of Eagles” from The Streets of San Francisco and the criminals will be played by John Saxon and Belinda Montgomery.

QM actors notes: Steve Ihnat guests in some QM series like The Fugitive (2), The FBI (7).

Returning guest actors: Steve Ihnat (the season 4 “The Maze”), Joanna Moore (the season 3 “The Tunnel”), Bettye Ackerman (the season 3 “Homecoming”), Paul Fix (the season 1 “How to Murder an Iron Horse”), Rose Hobart (the season 4 “Breakthrough”).

THE FBI SEASON 5

Episode #14

“Journey Into Night”
written by Robert Heverly
directed by Virgil W. Vogel
cinematography by William W. Spencer
guests: John Vernon, Michael Kearney, Anthony Eisley, Dabbs Greer, Nellie Burt, Julienne Marie, Ken Swofford, Lauren Gilbert, Fred Sadoff, Pat Renella, Tol Avery, Don Keefer, Paul Napier, Nancy Jeris, Frank Jamus, Barbara Dodd, Ben Young

ESCAPED FEDERAL PRISONER, INTERSTATE TRANSPORTATION OF STOLEN PROPERTY

It’s a both sentimental and downbeat family drama and a long and one way trip about an escaped convict on the run and his young son suffering from a terminal illness (leukemia) disguised as a kidnapping case. The main interest of this conventional story is to watch the performance of actor John Vernon playing both a crook (evil) and a father (good), two contradictory figures and, furthermore, keeps on conning bank managers with phony checks from town to town. One scene not to miss: the father escapes from a slick honky tonk owner and his two armed henchman at the exit of a poker game! The helicopter is back! The script is penned by story consultant Robert Heverly. Find the second episode done by the new regime duo: Robert Heverly/Virgil W. Vogel. As in the previous episode “Blood Tie” done by the duo, it is very corny but it’s the best of the two.

QM actors notes: John Vernon guests in some QM series like The FBI (4), Cannon (4), Barnaby Jones. Actor Fred Sadoff will be cast as police psychiatrist Dr. Lenny Murchison in The Streets of San Francisco.

Returning guest actors: John Vernon (the season 3 “Southwind”), Anthony Eisley (the season 4 “The Intermediary”), Dabbs Greer (the season 4 “The Runaways”), Nellie Burt (the season 1 “The Chameleon”), Tol Avery (the season 4 “The Flaw”), Don Keefer (the season 4 “The Young Warriors”), Nancy Jeris (the season 1 “All the Streets Are Silent”), Frank Jamus (the season 4 “The Attorney”), Barbara Dodd (the season 3 “Ring of Steel”).

THE FBI SEASON 5

Episode #15

“The Doll Courier”
written by Gerald Sanford
directed by Herschel Daugherty
cinematography by William W. Spencer
guests: William Smithers, Penny Fuller, Richard O’Brien, Viveca Lindfors, Josephine Hutchinson, Robert Wolders, Anthony Eisley, Peter Brandon, Julie Bennett, Walter Mathews, Nola Thorp, Guy Remsen

ESPIONAGE, MURDER

It’s a dull and endless espionage intrigue centered around an expensive antique doll called the Marie Antoinette used by a Soviet liaison agent to collect stolen government data about a satellite. The episode should not be titled “The Doll Courier” but “The Dull Courier”! Only the epilogue is exciting because the entire network is arrested! Many Soviet agents own a front office in New York: a photo lab, a library and a doll antique shop. Part of that plot will be recycled during season 6 and 7. The cast of the Soviet spy consists of William Smithers as the cold courier agent, Viveca Lindfors as the innocent antique shop owner, Robert Wolders as the network head agent posing as the playboy nephew of the antique shop owner, Penny Fuller as the art department agent and the girlfriend of the network head agent.

QM actors notes: William Smithers guests in some QM series like The FBI (4), The Invaders (2), Cannon, The Streets of San Fancisco, Barnaby Jones (2), The Manhunter, Most Wanted.

Returning guest actors: William Smithers (the season 4 “The Fraud”), Richard O’Brien (the season 4 “The Enemies”), Viveca Lindfors (the season 3 “A Sleeper Wakes”), Anthony Eisley (the season 5 “Journey Into Night”), Walter Mathews (the season 4 “The Fraud”), Guy Remsen (the season 4 “The Maze”).

Episode #16

“Tug-of-War”
written by Mark Weingart
story by Anthony Spinner
directed by Don Medford
cinematography by William W. Spencer
guests: Don Gordon, Michele Carey, Barry Nelson, Frank Campanella, Lew Brown, Dean Harens, Frank Christi, John Ward, Mark Allen, Harry Page, James Seay, Tom Palmer, Jim McKrell, Bill Cort

ORGANIZED CRIME, INTERSTATE TRANSPORTATION OF STOLEN PROPERTY, MAJOR THEFT, ATTEMPTED MURDER

It’s a very good and tough Cosa Nostra entry about a smuggler who bleeds straight stockbrokers as a vampire combined with a woman with two lovers (a honest man and a gangster)—the woman is actually an instrument to fool pigeons. As usual, actress Michele Carey is a pure delight and is dressed with the latest fashion to greater effects! Scenes not to miss: Michelle Carey playing on the swings, shot with a wide angle lens mounted on the swing itself; Don Gordon watching Michelle Carey and Barry Nelson, shot high angle from the balcony; Erskine and Colby chasing and arresting the henchman in the staircase; two silent hitmen eliminating the henchman in the squash court! Find the same two actors playing the hitmen from the Cosa Nostra episode “Silent Partner”. The script is penned by associate producer Mark Weingart from a story by season 9 producer Anthony Spinner. The cast of the Cosa Nostra people is good and realistic: Don Gordon as the stocks smuggler, Frank Christi as the henchman-killer, Frank Campanella as the big boss.

QM actors notes: Don Gordon guests in some QM series like The Untouchables (4), The Fugitive, 12 O’Clock High (2), The FBI (6), The Invaders, Cannon (2), The Streets of San Francisco (2), Barnaby Jones.

Returning guest actors: Don Gordon (the season 4 “The Cober List”), Lew Brown (the season 5 “Target of Interest”), Dean Harens (the season 5 “The Inside Man”), John Ward (the season 5 “Blood Tie”), Mark Allen (the season 2 “Ordeal”), James Seay (the season 2 “The Conspirators”), Tom Palmer (the season 4 “The Hero”).

The FBI is a great series, I was recently watching some episodes from season 2 on the DVD's. I think the series loses a little steam in it's last two seasons, 8 and 9, but having said that it's still a good series all the way through.

THE FBI SEASON 5

Episode #17

“Fatal Imposter”
written by Anthony Spinner
directed by Jesse Hibbs
cinematography by William W. Spencer
guests: Gerald S. O’Loughlin, Norma Crane, David Cassidy, Mary Fickett, John Considine, John Lasell, Larry Ward, Allen Emerson, Joel Lawrence, Stephen Coit, Nick Ford, Jan Burrell, Paul Todd

UNLAWFUL FLIGHT, MURDER

It’s a nice little manhunt/road trip and a wounded fugitive on the run threatening and using a reduced family (Mary Fickett as the widower, David Cassidy as the son) as hostages entry centered around the evil persona of actor Gerald S. O’Loughlin—wearing a toupee. The peak of the narrative is when Inspector Erskine poses a real estate agent to enter the home of the hostages and shows his card to a frightened widower. Fashion-wise, the sixteen year old son wears a hip tartan slacks and Efrem Zimbalist, Jr. wears a Sherlock Holmes-like tartan coat. For the anecdote, actor Larry Ward plays a road block policeman and John Lasell as a local town policeman in love with the widower.

QM actors notes: Gerald S. O’Loughlin guests in some QM series like 12 O’Clock High, The FBI (3), Dan August, Cannon.

Returning guest actors: Gerald S. O’Loughlin (the season 2 “Ordeal”), Norma Crane (the season 3 “Blood Verdict”), John Considine (the season 4 “The Young Warriors”), John Lasell (the season 4 “Conspiracy of Silence”), Allen Emerson (the season 4 “The Enemies”), Stephen Coit (the season 2 “Collision Course”).

directed by Don Medford
cinematography by Fred Mandl
guests: James Olson, Katherine Justice, Armando Silvestre, J.D. Cannon, Noam Pitlik, Hank Brandt, William Sargent, James McCallion, Natividad Vacío, Vitina Marcus, Bill Hickman

VICTIM — CIVIL RIGHTS

It’s an ordinary modern-day western drama and a whodunit dealing with illegal immigration at the Mexican border and a night murder committed by a mysterious man in uniform combined with a wealthy family drama that includes a corrupted eyewitness and a man falsely-accused. In other words and despite the scenery, it’s a long investigation in which Erskine does a conventional interrogator job. For the anecdote, Erskine and Colby wear casual countryside outfits. Find the only credits for cinematographer Fred Mandl who will return next season. The cast of the suspects consists of James Olson as the sheriff and J.D. Cannon as the proprietor.

QM actors notes: James Olson guests in some QM series like The FBI (3), Cannon (2), The Streets of San Francisco (3), Barnaby Jones (2), The Manhunter, Most Wanted, The Runaways.

INTERSTATE TRANSPORTATION OF STOLEN PROPERTY, MAJOR THEFT

It’s a minor and adequate gang of jewel thieves entry that oddy ends up in New Orleans but the novelties lie in three facts: the maid tips off one of the thief, the two accomplices double-cross and threaten their own leader, the old leader has a heart condition that gives an unusual outcome. The script is penned by story consultant Robert Heverly. Actor Murray Matheson plays a gentleman fence who enjoys antique puppets and is assisted by a trigger happy body guard played by Steve Gravers. The cast of the thieves is good: Jack Klugman as the old thief leader with a heart condition, Daniel J. Travanti as the brutal leading underlying thief, Richard Evans as the young underlying thief.

QM actors notes: Jack Klugman guests in some QM series like The Untouchables (2), The New Breed, The Fugitive (2), The FBI (2), Banyon.
