I'm partly through watching the new "Holy Grail" special edition from Columbia/Tristar and so far, I'm quite pleased. The new anamorphic transfer is an imrpovement, although there are still some definite print flaws to contend with at times. The new Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack certainly isn't agressive (nor did I expect it to be so), but I was certainly pleased with the fact that it sounded noticably clearer and cleaner.
The disc also comes in a nifty shimmery slip-case and has tons of cool extras - two commentaries and lots of goodies on the second disc.
More Later.

I want my copy, now!

He thought on homeland, the big timber, the air thin and chill all the year long. Tulip poplars so big through the trunk they put you in mind of locomotives set on end. He thought of getting home and building him a cabin on Cold Mountain so high that not a soul but the nighthawks passing across the clouds in autumn could hear his sad cry. Of living a life so quiet he would not need ears. And if Ada would go with him, there might be the hope, so far off in the distance he did not even really see it, that in time his despair might be honed off to a point so fine and thin that it would be nearly the same as vanishing.

Two commentaries?!

Can you say who's on each commentary and is it a separately recorded then edited or group affair?
What's the "Follow the Killer Rabbit" feature? Occasional video footage of the commentary recordings? Trivia?

You say you've already got one!? How can that be?
I was sent by God on a mission to search...
Oh, nevermind...

I'm not liking the sound of "shimmery slipcase". Could you elaborate? Is this another cardboard abomination?

I think it would hardly be seen as insensitive, to be honest, simply because it's such a throwaway line. And there is no way they would ever alter the soundtrack.
The worst they would do is delay the street date a few months, but they've probably started shipping their stocks by now, and a recall might not be feasible.

Larry, it's getting to the point where the ludicrious has become reality. I read a bit on reel.com the other day that said they're re-looping a bit of dialogue in the rerelease of E.T. to eliminate a line where Elliot's mother says a kid in a Halloween costume looks like "a terrorist."
Honestly, nothing would surprise me at this point.

They're mistaken. The dialogue cut was made WAY before the 9/11 attacks. See:

Back to Holy Grail, I saw it over the summer when it was released theatrially and it looked great. I can't wait to get my hands on the SE DVD!

Well, harrumph. So what was Dee Wallace Stone on when she made those statements, anyway? Maybe they're replacing the revised line with yet another iteration. Never mind.
I am looking forward to finally retiring my Criterion LD of Holy Grail to the archive (but I'm hanging onto it).

The "shimmery slipcase" is made out of clear plastic. It's sort of like the "Superbit" situation, where you have a nice cover for the usual case.
Commentary One: Terry Jones and Terry Gilliam
Commentary Two: Eric Idle, Michael Palin and John Cleese

Aaron, does disc two include the whole film in Japanese or just clips of the film in Japanese?

There's an article here that talks about the new disc, including the surprising news that the Gilliam/Jones commentary is ported from the Criterion LD. This is a great track, and one that's got sentimental value for me because it's the first commentary I ever heard.
Wonder how Columbia pulled that off? Probably a situation like Boogie Nights where Python, not Criterion, owned the track.
In any case, this disc is getting cooler and cooler. Can't wait for "Knights of the Roundtable" done in LEGOs.

I can't wait for this DVD to come out! It's about time that this movie got the treatment it deserves. One more week...
Btw, you can catch the LEGO animated rendition at LEGO's website.
