ok I'm looking at a new system (budget in mind)
I'm looking at a receiver from Sony. It has HDMI input. It also has Component input and output.

I'm also looking at a dvd player that can upconvert to HD through the hdmi cable.

If I hook the upconverting dvd player hdmi wire to the receiver, that, I believe will put the signal and sound into the receiver.
I only have component input in my TV.
Will I get any benefit from the upconverting?

no, you should look to a dvd player that upconverts over componet, or an outboard video processor that outputs component. The latter is obviously much more expensive.
