    Sucks!

I caught their video for "She Hates me" the other day and the first thing I thought was "that is the worst Kurt Cobain impression I've ever heard." What is the deal? I've listened to the album and it almost seems as if the lead vocalist tries to sound like very singer that emerged from the Seattle scene, from Cobain to Layne Staley. Is there no originality left in rock? No wonder I rarely buy any Cd's anymore.

My feelings exactly Todd. I'm having a really hard time finding any new rock CD's to buy. Except for System of a Down, everything seems to be a copy of something else that was already done.

Well, blame the "look" of the video on Fred Durst as he has produced all of Puddle of Mudd's video's so far. So I'm pretty sure he directed "She Hates Me". I haven't seen it though so I cannot comment on it.

Considering that Fred Durst is the one who got them signed, that is not surprising...
While the first time I heard the song I though it was a Cobain impression, I have to say I don't mind the song anymore. I listened to a friend's copy and didn't feel the album was worth buying.

To each their own, I dig em personally. I dont like that they associate with that clown Durst, but oh well.

I never knew much about these puddle of mud guys until I happened across them on MTV a few days back.

In watching their video it kinda occurred to me:

When the "grunge" - altrock thing of the early 90's happened- the bands, for the most part, were all made up of artsy type, college educated twenty somethings. Despite the earthy bohemian fashion sense, these were- for the most part- artistic, well read and culturally aware.

It seems as the early part of the 00's brings some bands emulating this "grunge" look and sound-- they seem to be made up largely of trailer park types. Looking at this puddle of mud band, and even more so the people I see around town- the kids who latched onto the whole image and continue to run with it are more often the opposite of the originators. The singer from Puddle of Mud looks like the kind of guy who would have spent his high school years beating up kids like Cobain... now he's emulating him in order to make money.

I'm not sure exactly what that means- but it is interesting to me as a pure pop-cultural observer. I'm beginning to wonder if everything that is wrong with popular culture is somehow associated with Fred Durst.

    hmmmmmmmmmm.

System is a quality band. some nice stuff going on in their music (i LOVE 'Toxicity').

however, i hope all you hard rock fans listen to Tool. they are HANDS DOWN the best rock band around today. their music is pure genius, and the lyrics are nothing short of poetry. Lateralus is one of my favorite CD's of all time, and it's an HDCD too!
