I was curious if the Stratus series from PSB is being discontinued with the release of the Platinum series.

I've been looking for a good pair of bookshelf speakers for a stereo system for the past few months, and I have a very good opportunity to get a pair of Status Mini's for a significantly reduced price. But, I was wondering if they're being discontinued, or if I should wait to have a listen to the new Planitum's??

    Thanks,

    Nick

If you can get the minis for a great price, and you like the way they sound, and you don't have money to burn, buy them. They are still a great speaker.

I don't believe the Stratus series is being replaced by the Platinums- it is a different level of performance and priced accordingly. If I recall correctly, the Platinum version of the mini called the M2 lists for $1700.00. The Mini lists for $1099.00.

Thanks for the info guys. I'll probably pick up a pair with the matching stands. The best part is I may be able to get both the stands and the speakers (demo units) for $750 CDN all together!![IMG]

I run Stratus Silveri 's, C6i center and Image 10S bipolor surround's through a B&K Ref50 pre and Ref200.5 amp. Since moving to seperates, i'm now thinking of picking up a pair of Stratus Mini's for the rear. I need to pick up a Ref200.2 amp too. Probably drive my main's with the Ref200.2 and let the Ref200.5 drive the center and four surround's. I'm very happy with the Stratus line. [IMG]

Chip; Stop thinking about it and do it. I have Silvers and a C-6 across the front with Mini's and Alpha's in the rear and I'm in audio nirvana.[IMG]

Some of you Stratus users, I could use some input. First off I have not listened to the Stratus Mini's yet. Very few PSB dealers in my part of the country carry the Stratus line. But with the help of PSB customer support a dealer with Stratus Mini's has been located about 200 miles away. Spoke to the dealer and they will work with me to either arrange a demo at their shop or ship the speakers to me for an in-home demo.

I am looking at the Mini's as the potential front L/R of a system primarily used for HT. I would then add a C6i center, a set of Image 10S for side surrounds and probably a set of Image 1B for rear surrounds in my 7.1 configuration.

Recently, I have demo'd in my home Paradigm Studio 20's, Boston Acoustics VR-M60's, RBH 41-SE, Onix Rocket RS250's, and Snell K.5 Mk II's. I have a seperate 2 channel system with ProAc Response 1SC's. We love the detail, soundstaging, sonic timbre, and lush midrange of the ProAc's, but everything else we listen to comes up lacking. So far the Boston Acoustics is the front runner from what we have listened to.

Can anyone give me some insight/opinions on what I may hear from the Stratus Mini's in comparison to any of the speakers I identified above?
    Thanks

I can't speak to any of the speakers you mention but what I find with the Mini's is a surprising amount of bass for a bookshelf and very smooth natural midrange. If you do end up with Stratus Mini's might I suggest you forgo the four Image speakers and get a 2nd pair of Mini's for a phenominal 5.1 setup. Ideally you want 5 identical speakers anyway, then later on you could add another pair of Mini's for 7.1 or another C-6 for 6.1.

With all this talk of the Stratus Mini's, it got me thinking. I have a pair of Stratus Mini's that I am using for my rear 7.1 setup right now. Do you guys think that the Stratus Mini's are better than the Image 6T'S? I am using 6T's for the L&R,Image C9 for center and Image 10s for surrounds, along with the Mini's for the backs. Would you guys suggest me setting up my system anyother way? Or just leave it as is?

What are you using for a sub?? I know that the Mini's are better speakers than the 6T's. If you have a decent sub and will set your speakers to small, I would definitely suggest you moving your Mini's to the front l/r position. It'll look funny with your towers as rears, but that's what I'm doing. I have Stratus Mini's for the Front L/R, a Paradigm CC-370 centre, Paradigm Monitor 11's as surrounds, and a Polk audio bookshelf and my Surround Centre.

I have minis in my stereo setup and Goldi, c5, and s10 in my HT...these speakers are definitely not for everybody...they are very laid back and neutral....you're just going to have to listen to them....get the inhome demo...

So the mini's are better than the Image 6t's. I just figured do to their size and the fact that they only have one 6 1/2 inch midrange driver compared to the 6t's with three, that the 6t's would do better on movie soundtracks. I know that bigger does not mean better but I have always heard to use towers for your fronts. I love PSB'S sound, I will never use another speaker. I used to have the Stratus Silvers and the C5 but sold them. Oh, and I am using two subs, one PSB Subsonic 3 and an AAD c-10.

If I was you I would definitely move the mini's up front, but this is just one man's opinion. You should try it out for yourself anyways, to see which configuration you prefer.

I was just afraid to push them really hard with movie soundtracks. The towers I can crank them up and put them in large mode with no worries. But it doesn't hurt to try them out and see how they sound as the mains.

if you have a sub that can handle the low end then you'll be ok...i had them up front in my ht before i got the goldis and they handled it pretty good

I was worried about the same thing as you. I mean my Monitor 11's are just so much more imposing and powerful looking with four 6-1/2" drivers, but I've yet to have any problems playing movies at near reference levels powering them with a decent Rotel amp. And the sound is a very noticeable upgrade over my Paradigms.
