hi guys i just got a new amp from onkyo its a TX-SR506
I know this amp only has audio passtrough for the sound in hdmi but my ps3 can only support 7.1 audio through the hdmi port
can anyone give me any tips on how i should hook my new amp to my ps3
i was trying to get the 7.1 spec with this new amp and also the ability to use hdmi
but i dont want to go back to the old 5.1 surround sound
one more question i have speakers that are 8ohms will they work with this amp without causing any damage to themselves and the amp or will i have to upgrade the speakers i also wanted to know if based on the amp specs could i hook up a non powered bass since the one i own basically just draws the power and sound it need from two regular speaker cables
and if i do need to upgrade what a decent inexpensive compatible option

im sorry that i am asking so many questions but speakers and amps is one thing i just dont know much of

thank you for any replies a
any help would be appreciated

here is the info for the amp straight from onkyo

It looks like the 506 only supports pass-thru meaning it cannot decode audio codecs over HDMI. You must, instead, connect another cable to carry the audio to the receiver if you want to play the audio through your receiver.

This creates an issue for you. You can connect digital coax or an optical cable, but will only get 5.1 and will not benefit from the new codecs. If you're player had 7.1 analog outputs you could use those, but I do not believe the PS3 has those.

At this point, I believe the only way you can get the new 7.1 codecs is by getting a new receiver or a new BluRay player with 7.1 analog outputs.

Regarding your other questions:

- That receiver is rated at 75W per channel at 8 ohms, so your speakers should be fine.

- I would suggest you move toward a powered subwoofer. A passive sub can be a pretty big drain on your receiver's power. Additionally, a passive sub will only pick up the low frequencies for the speakers that are attached to it which is kind of like removing the .1 from 5.1 or 7.1.

If you are interested in buying a powered sub, let us know your budget and we can point you in the best direction.

seth ive decided i would like to make the switch to a non passtrough amp
what would be a good receiver that supports this type of hdmi feature at the lowest price possible right now

and a powered bass the budget for it would be less than a 150 if possible considering that i now have to buy a different receiver and i now wont be getting the savings i got for this one

one more question so the passtrough hdmi just completely ignores the sound even if the ps3 decodes it?

HDMI pass-through is for video only, for easy switching. For audio, you'll need to use a separate cable.
