Numerous web-sites have stated that Sony will likely announce a $100 price drop on the 60GB PS3 at next week's E3. The announcement is predicted for July 12th.

Even if Sony does not announce an across the board price drop at all retailers as predicted, a major retailer will have the PS3 on sale for $499 from July 15th thru July 21st. I believe that the Forum rules prohibit naming the retailer, or posting a scan of the ad, until the ad has been made available to the general public / is in circulation (which should be on Saturday 7/14 at midnight). I have seen an ad scan for this retailer and can confirm the $499 price.

This $100 price drop (or sale), along with the 5 Free Blu-Ray movies, makes for a nice deal. See this thread for details on the 5 Free Blu-Ray movies:

GameDaily and Cheap Ass Gamer are both reporting this likely price drop and you can check out the articles here:

If you are contemplating an imminent PS3 purchase, it would probably be beneficial to hold-off for the next 10 days or so.

Stay tuned for further details.

As Ron Reda has pointed out, Circuit City has dropped the price of the PS3 to $499:

In addition, they have a promotion with purchase running this week, and you get an additional Sony Wireless Controller ($50 value) free with purchase.

A PS3 purchase is getting very tempting to me now . . . unfortunately my wife is not as easily swayed. :frowning:

It's now no longer a price cut. It's a liquidation price. Once the current supply of 60 GB are gone, THEY ARE GONE. The new 80 GB SKU for $599 becomes normal.

Yep, so this is a price that lasts until all 60GB units are liquidated, rather then an ongoing new price point for the unit.

As soon as they run out or stop making the 60gig, the 80gig will drop to the $499 pricepoint. The difference in price to manufacture the two is negligible. They'll just remove the 'limited edition' moniker and take out the game.

Yeah, I haven't heard that stated anywhere that the 80G will go to $499. If that's true, then this price-cut/liquidation really bites those in the butt who buy. Wait a month or two and get a better unit at same price (?)

Apparently, according to those interviewed by JoyStiq & GameIndustry.Biz, the 80GB model will go back to $599, but will drop the hardware emulation of PS2 for the software emulation.

There won't be a source because no company ever announces price drops before it happens. It is just common sense and follows what they have done in the past.

And Chris, what you just said is exactly why they will never announce a price cut ahead of time. And the 80gig won't go back to $599, it already is $599. They probably have a couple million 60gig PS3's unsold so it will be a bit before those sell out.

And the difference in manufacturing price being pennies was said by I believe the EU sony exec.

Amazon gives you a free Bluray remote and a Bluray disc (Resident Evil Apocalypse) with order if you click on the Price Drop Bonus link. Last week they were giving away a copy of Memento instead of Resident Evil Apocalypse. This makes the deal a bit better than Circuit City's free wireless controller because you can get free shipping and no tax in most states.

I really don't understand why an 80G unit would be that big of a switch from the 60G. Considering the 360 Elite is still a worlds ahead in storage capacity, and about $100 cheaper. I guess the Blu-ray player is the big selling point here, because it certainly isn't the games.

The current (running through August) deal where you can send away for 5 Blu-Ray discs with purchase of a player includes both RE: Apocalypse and Memento as choices, and IIRC it's valid with purchase of a PS3.

Holy Crap!

I was gonna get the Amazon deal the other day but I hesitated and chose to run it by my wife first... Big mistake!

She was fine with the purchase but now the Amazon deal is gone! Anyone know of a place online that will still sell a $500 PS3 with either an extra controller or a remote + movie combo thrown in?

Costco sells it with Motorstorm and an extra wireless controller for $579. Not sure about any other current deals.

I took the plunge and picked-up a PS3 yesterday. I was driving back from Washington and stopped at a Circuit City in Oregon (a state with no sales tax). I had a AAA 10% Circuit City coupon with me. Game consoles are supposed to be one of the exclusions for this coupon, but the clerk entered the coupon code / serial number and it was accepted.
I got my PS3 for $449.99 out-the-door.

I have read several reports of the AAA 10% Circuit City coupon being accepted on PS3 purchases, but I have also read numerous reports of it being denied.

You can request the coupon here:
http://www.aaa.com/CircuitCity

I'm a AAA member so it was easy for me to request the coupon. I've read that non-members can also get a coupon emailed to them. Try following these instructions from the above link:

(1) use zip code 94111
(2) Click on 'Click here' to have promotional code emailed to you
(3) use zip code 94111 again
(4) choose "enter as non-member"
(5) enter your email address
(6) coupon arrives in as as little as 30 minutes

Note that you may have to clear your cookies in order to get this to work.

Another way to pick-up a PS3 for $450 is from Target (as long as you don't have one of their VISA cards). At check-out, the cashier should offer you one of their VISA cards. If you are accepted, you will save 10% on your current purchase. This was going to be my Oregon back-up plan if the AAA 10% Circuit City coupon was not accepted.

Both of these (AAA 10% Circuit City coupon and Target VISA) are YMMV.

Nice tip!

I think if I take the plunge it'll still be with Sears though. A PS3 won't fit in this month's budget, but 2 years at 0% financing is definitely doable. :)
