The Network Adapter for PS2 does both 56k and broadband.

Your friend is the confused one.

This reminds me of when I picked up my Network Adapter at EB. Guy told me alot of people were returning them and canceling preorders because Sony decided to make it broadband only. I pointed out the 2 connectors on back and he then said "Some are broadband only, the rest are 56K/broadband" I took my NA and laughed all the way home.

I think that some 3rd parties are making Network Adapters that might be only BB or 56k, or they could be referring to USB adapters.

If you get an Official Sony PS2 Network Adapter, then you'll notice that it has a hole for BB and a hole for 56k.
