why does this game feel like some community college student designed it? Why is it that when I die
I have to restart the level? are the "checkpoints" for decoraction only? Why haven't all 3-D adventure games adopted the Zelda lock-on system instead of my sword flailing about uselessly? ugh, damn you Capcom, keep it 2D from now on, please. back on E-bay you go

Oscar, did you ever play the old arcade game "Ghosts'n'Goblins"? Maximo is the spiritual successor to that series, and thus Capcom USA decided to make it play a lot like the old arcade games, just in 3D. Thus, limited saves/continues, tough gameplay etc. It's not everyone's cup of tea obviously [IMG]

of course i've played ghost and goblins, which is why I mentioned keep it 2-D.

how much better would that have been? a 2-D version with
updated graphics? or am I just getting old?

You're just getting old (although you're not the geezer that I am.. yet). [IMG]
I've had a great time with Maximo, but I had to stretch the limits of my patience to be rewarded. Ordinarily (as Oscar knows) I'll put a game down that stops providing immediate gratification. I got stuck in the 2nd world in Maximo, at a save point with 1 life, in my polka dot undershorts, and put the game down for a few weeks.
But I set aside one night to fight my way through... and was able to concoct a save point in the Pirate/Snow world, with plenty of lives and full armor. It can be done.. especially if I can do it. That second Voodoo Boss
is pretty freaky.. took me several tries but I managed to do it!
Keep at it.. this is a frustrating but solid title.

Aren't they including a 2-D mini-game or something in the sequel?

I really didn't think it was too bad really. I rented it for a week and I thought it was pretty good. The graphics were beautiful. Smooth lines and beautiful colors with very little break-up to boot! I know there were some control issues and the camera sort of screwed with you at the worst possible times but hey, a pretty solid title in my opinion. [IMG]

I just finished the game last night.
I am a huge fan of the Ghosts'n'Goblins/Ghouls'n'Ghost series.
I played through just about ever one of these I think.
To 2nd Oscar I would have loved a 2D version.
    Capcom are you listening? [IMG]
    However I did enjoy Maximo.
The style is cool, the grafx + sound/music also very nice.
This is one hard game though.
I put it down for a while on several occasions before coming back to it.
I must admit the camera is the major problem in this game.
All 3D platformers have camera problems, but this one is 2 steps back instead of 1 step forward imo.
For starters full user control of the camera with the right thumb stick would have helped very much imo.
Hit detection could have also been tightened up a bit.
    Cheap hits abound.
Judging jumping distances I also found very difficult at times.
Just a little tip that helped me.
Load up on lives & money by replaying the first level for starters & any other level you can master that has extra lives, & lots of money.
Save every time you beat an area.
I don't think I will try to open the master mode though.
Camcom may have lost their mind with this challenge.

We're getting Super Ghouls 'n' Ghosts on GBA with a remix version in the game, so I guess Capcom is trying to give us some sort of 2-D Maximo-styled game.
