With Linus's accent, its hard to tell just how he means to say it, but the story I heard was he named it after minix, which was derived from mini unix. So I pronounce it like the AC company.
Now back on topic. Definitely dime. Yep, no other way. As for the French, well they pronounce a lot of things wrong. My friend Jeanne, pronounced genie, said her name is French and is pronounced like Joan, with kind of a z sound at the beginning. If that's the case, I don't trust the French when it comes to pronouncing things properly.
