I was looking into buying a used rear projection TV and wondering about resolutions it will support. It says it has a horizontal resolution of 800. Does that mean it will run media at 720p? It also say its not HD ready so wondering what that means? its a Toshiba 61A62. Any help appreciated!

The set you're looking at is a standard-definition analog television, probably one of the last Toshiba made, not a digital HDTV. "Horizontal resolution" is not a measure of the number of scan lines that run horizontally across the screen, and are measured from top to bottom. That's because the number of scan lines in an analog NTSC set is always the same - 480 active lines, that's the resolution limit of the system. "Horizontal resolution" refers to the number of vertical columns of phosphor dots that run from one side of the screen to the other. This can vary. A 16:9 widescreen set like the Toshiba will naturally have more "lines" of horizontal resolution than a 4:3 TV, but it doesn't have a single additional scan line. It can't do 720p or even 540p (or any other "p" resolution. As a CRT-based set, it can only do interlaced pictures to begin with - in this case, 480i.)

Sorry.

Regards,

Joe
