Is there any DVD player out there that has great quality and audio/video reproduction, with progressive scan and S-video out... and also supports the following formats (in order of importance)

    SVCD
    DVD
    VCD
    Audio CD
    MP3 CD

Obviously it will have to support DVD/CD/CDR/CDRW disc formats.

Can anyone make some suggestions please?

    Thank you.

The JVC 500BK and it's silver sister the 502SL will do all of the above at a great price.

Is the image quality on the JVC good compared to the other top brands?

I have a JVC and the image comes very close to my Pioneer Elite DV-37 (the JVC has a tad more halo-ing and ringing, but doesn't have the chroma bug the Pioneer has).

So far I've been very happy with it.

SVCD is rarely supported. JVC does seem to be the few brands that support it. If SVCD is important to you consider getting one solely for that purpose. The JVC's are fine but they don't necessarily offer the best DVD performance for the money. There are always tradeoffs. I think it's a good buy but don't expect top notch video performance from JVC units.

The Panny RP82 seems to support SVCD pretty well. I've only tried a few but they all work properly.

Any feedback on these two DVD players... they have progressive scan and play SVCDs...

    Pioneer 656a
    Sony DV-S715p

I am looking for best image quality between these and the JVC (and the Panasonic?) and also obviously the ability for recognition of different brands of CDRs for SVCDs, etc.

Well, I went to Future Shop today and they only had the DVD-RP62 and I tried an SVCD in it, and it played. I guess the DVD-RP82 isn't the only one that you need to step up to for SVCD (both are progressive scan as well btw).

Josh Lowe you said that the Panasonic DVD-RP82 plays SVCDs quite well, however the instruction manual of the DVD player says that it will not play SVCDs. Look on page 5 of the user manual from the Panasonic website (section headed DISCS THAT CANNOT BE PLAYED)
The manual is in PDF format... use Adobe Acrobat to view it.
    Go to www.panasonic.com
Click on CUSTOMER SUPPORT on the top right hand corner
Click on OPERATING MANUALS ONLINE on the left side
In the "Model Number" field put in "DVDRP82" and it will bring up the manual for you.
So which is it? Does it play SVCDs or not? [IMG]
