5 channel stereo multiplies the 2 channels out to get 5 channels. Sound that would normally be heard from one speaker is sent to more than one speaker. This is an increase in sound, so it's going to be louder. Dolby ProLogic divides the 2 channels into 5 parts (4 actually). Each part then goes to a different speaker, but the sum of the parts does not exceed the whole.

I know you're not going to like the answer...

For CDs and radio: plain old 2 channel stereo

For watching TV and maybe some games: Dolby ProLogic

For DVDs: Dolby Digital or DTS

To have music coming from every speaker when you host a party: 5 channel stereo

So how do you watch music video's? Dolby 'cause it's TV, or two channel, 'cause it's music? [IMG]

FYI, many games are now encoded in Dolby Surround, and the X-Box an encode 5.1 Dolby Digital on the fly.

    Aaron:

Yeah I know, but for the "X" and PS2, I have no optical wire.
