I was going to put this in EACH of the MANY "Joe Sixpack" hate threads that are littering the HTF, but decided to just put it here instead. It is not an OAR vs. P&S discussion.
Has HTF become the center of J6P bashing? I left the USNET because of this type of bandwidth wasting drivel. Do people flock here just to blame J6P and family for the woes of the entire free world? He is called a moron, Efing a-hole that drags his knuckles when he walks, dumb, stupid, and is despised by all. It seems some of these threads are started to just see how many people will chime in with "Me Too's"
Were we not ALL Joe Sixpacks at one time? Did we not ALL eventualy see the light of OAR? Can we cut the "I hate anyone that has a different opinion then mine" crap and spend the efforts developing ways to "enlighten" those that have not seen the light? Save the bandwidth for something constructive/informative.
If you want to be usefull do something that IS usefull.
-Educate people on the differences of OAR and P&S. (Clue: Assume everyone here at HTF knows the difference, so start somewhere else)
-Promote OAR by buying OAR.
-Promote OAR by buying an 16:9 TV. (Yeah, J6P thinks there too expensive too)
-Petition the studios for more OAR
-Quit wasting bandwith by preaching to the choir!!!!!!
Whew... I feel better now.

hehe. Love it! I too grow weary of the elitism that virtually oozes from some of these threads around here. Hey, I own a Panasonic Tau widescreen moniter that cost me a pretty penny, yet you won't ever find me complaining that the widescreen Shrek was on disk two.
The studios will wise up eventually if we continue to throw our money in the right direction. No OAR = No Sale, and that is all we need to say. Case closed. Leave poor J6P be, he's got enough worries.

Relative to everyone else on this forum, I might be seen as J6P as well. Sure I like my movies in OAR, but because I don't see Edge Enhancement (whatever the hell that is, I quit trying to figure it out) or I don't care either way about anamorphic widescreen (it's cool to have, but it's not going to prevent me from gettting a DVD), I'm basically J6P. Being from the South doesn't help me either.

This is who J6P is to me
1-Someone who just wants to go with the flow, not rock the boat
2-Someone who prefers ignorance to knowlege, and takes pride in it
3-Someone who jumps on every bandwagon they see
4-Someone who spurns creativity and innovation in exchange for routine
Joe Six Pack is not just an HT problem, he's a problem for anyone that doesn't want to just coast through life.

"Were we not ALL Joe Sixpacks at one time? Did we not ALL eventualy see the light of OAR?"
The very first time I saw a letterboxed presentation of a theatrical release was during a commercial network broadcast of Woody Allen's Manhattan back in 1981. I remember blurting out to my then wife who was in the kitchen, "Hey, Linda, come check this out. It's brilliant. You can see the movie as it was shown in the theater!"
Four years earlier, I saw firsthand how horrifying and revolting pan-and-scan truly is when NBC aired, for the first time ever on American television, a butchered version of 2001: A Space Odyssey.
As Jeff indicates above, we here don't, as a rule, diss "J6P" simply for the sake of dissing him and making fun of him. What we decry is the willful ignorance he seems to revel in. That is, once he has been shown the "light," as it were, yet still refuses to yield, then he's the target of our ire--because the studios are threatening to embrace pan-and-scan on DVD simply because J6P is screaming for it. That, of course, ruins it for us--and we're the ones who helped make DVD (and LaserDisc and widescreen VHS) a success.

I find dissing J6P worthless ... Mainly because I feel a strong urge to beat some sense into him ... He's at my home on a regular basis ...
He's Mighty Mouses nemesis ... He's Savior Faire ... He's Everywhere ...
The main problem I see with J6P ... I get the urge they're always right and they have no desire to change ...
