Pre/pro compared to a just a pre amp??? (1 Viewer)

I'm pretty satisfied with a $300 pre amp for my stereo. How much do you think I'll need to spend on a pre/pro to get the same quality of sound? Is this even possible due to the inclusion of a processor chip in the signal path?

my guess is 1500 bucks new.

For the most part even moderately priced stereo pre-amps kept the design aspects right. The sub 1000 pre/pros never did sound right to me for music...too grainy and electronic.

Sure, I'm sure folks will say all pre-amps sound the same but this is MHO after owning half a dozen myself.
