I'm considering purchasing a blu-ray player to use with my Toshiba 65H80 RPTV. The 65H80 has no HDMI input - just component video, but it is "HDTV-Ready" and will handle a 1080i signal. Can anyone tell me if running a blu-ray player through this old RPTV will produce a substantially improved image compared with the excellent results I currently have with my Panasonic RP91? Thanks for your help!

I have a Toshiba 57H81 (I think), it's 7 years old and running a PS3 to it via component gives a stunning blu ray picture over standard DVD. I have no desire to upgrade my TV with the quality picture I have. Long live CRT :D

I'm using a 65H80 and over component Blu-ray and HD DVD both have a significant improvement over DVD (most of the time---there were a couple wretched clunkers early on in the formats). I just got an HDMI capable receiver (the Pioneer 910) for the lossless sound and run component to the television from a Sony S550 and it works a charm. The only thing you're missing is that you don't get upconversion of standard DVD over component due to the knotheads who designed the standards.

Playstation 3, although generally the best BD player, probably isn't right for you if your TV is still in the analog world like mine is; it's really set up for HDMI and you have to get additional converters to make it work. I'm pretty happy with the S550.

You'll probably want to touch up your convergence for maximum clarity.

Thanks for the input, all. I picked up a Panasonic BD55 today and it looks (and sounds) great! So glad I took the plunge.
