PowerDVD and SPDIF ouput - Any old output? (1 Viewer)

Will any SPDIF output utilize any number of channels? I mean my MB came with an SPDIF (optical and COAX) output, but the onboard analogue AC97 output only supports 5.1. Does that mean the SPDIF out will only pass 5.1 or can it still pass any number of channels up to say 7.1? Can PowerDVD support any digital out?

The format that S/PDIF will output depends on the software; i.e. the limitation is not the S/PDIF itself but the software that controls what is being sent to it.
