Power To The People: British Music Videos 1966–2016

I just got this new 6 DVD set in the mail from Amazon UK, and I've only played parts of a couple of discs 4 and 5 and I'm totally blown away. "Weekender" by Flowered Up is the Citizen Kane of rock videos and the Apex Twin videos are like miniature feature films. The choreography, editing, art direction, lighting... so many ideas here!

This has to rank as one of the most important music collections of all time. I thought this would be a roundup of the "usual suspects" from MTV back when it still played music, and that would have been fine, but it is MUCH more than that. I only recognize a few of the videos I watched, and I have no idea how the ones I didn't recognize escaped me. It's some of the most exciting and innovative film making I've ever seen.

The image and sound quality on these videos are stellar. Every one is in its proper aspect ratio. I honestly had a hard time believing I was watching an SD DVD at times. The DVDs are anamorphic and are in PAL, so if you are ordering from the US, you need a region free player. Six discs, about 15 hours of material. It's going to take me a long time to work my way though all this, and I'm really excited about it.

Here is what's on the set...

Sounds interesting. Most of that stuff would have been shot on 16mm. Did they actually go back and make new scans from film? Or did they just try to digitally clean up old tape masters?

What's the difference between band performance and vocal performance?

They did go in and restore at least one from film... Flowered Up's "Weekender" has a screen full of credits at the end for film restoration. Most are still from the original video masters, but they look wonderful. Even the older ones shot on video look great. I suspect the sound is totally remastered. The sound quality is consistent and excellent.

The subject headers are the themes of the videos. They're grouped. Band Performance means that the video focuses on the whole band performing together. Vocal Performance focuses on the lead singer. "Masculinities" is titled with tongue in cheek because a lot of them are not what you normally think of with that term. The Queen video is a jaw dropper because the whole band is in drag and only Freddie Mercury seems to be enjoying it.

Johnny Rotten's "My Way" is uncensored and includes the audio. When it aired in the US on Mr Mike's Mondo Video (Michael O'Donahough NBC TV Special), they pixeled out the finger gesture, cut out Johnny shooting people in the audience and snipped out a brief bit where mimes shooting up dope. They also omitted the music altogether and ran a scroll over the video explaining that when the show's producers contacted Paul Anka for the rights to air the song, he told them "over my dead body". I'd never seen that video unscathed before. It's amazing.
