    Hi,

I'm looking to upgrade my old "Powder" (Jeff Goldblum movie, 1995) laserdisc with a DVD but I'm not sure which one to get.

I know the R1 DVD has been out for a while but is NOT anamorphic. Last week I fell upon a R2 disc that seems to have been released in 2004 but I couldn't determine if it was anamorphic or not. All it says on the back is "Widescreen 1.85:1".

Does anybody have the R1 or R2 discs (or both?)

    Thanks,

    John

I'd say go for it and get the r2 and give us a report.

How does the laserdisc look and sound?

I'd say it's a definete bet that it's anamorphic. My 'What About Bob?' DVD says the same thing (same studio) and that's anamorphic (in fact, very few R2 Buena Vista films are non-anamorphic).

Wowsers, you have an anamorphic "What About Bob?". Okay, Play has Powder R2 listed for £5.99 so I'll take the plunge :)

Better believe it. Not too bad PQ either for a film that was 13 years old at the DVD's release. Some very minor film artifacts and EE. It's definetly looking it's Sunday best. Sadly, the trailer from R1 is not on the disc. WAB? can be picked for the same price as you got Powder, maybe cheaper.

BTW, as mod of DVD Compare, when you get the Powder disc could you give me some specs. We don't appear to have it in our database.

DVD Compare. Now there's a website that I keep going back to hoping there'll be an update.

Kind of useless without picture comparisons.[IMG]

Sorry, yes, I should have reported back on this sooner. I'm delighted to say that both POWDER and WHAT ABOUT BOB? are indeed anamorphic in R2.

Picture and sound is excellent on both titles :)

My next targets are JUDGE DREDD and THE ROCKETEER. Not convinced either of these are available anamorphic anywhere :-(

Indeed they are. Do not get the R2 UK Judge Dredd from Pathe as it cuts out headbutts. And one of the extras is censored by 20 secs.

R4 Dredd is a good choice. [IMG]

I work on it in my spare time. Something that I lack at the moment, so I haven't updated in a few weeks. Hopefully, I should have more time soon.
