A frequent question around these parts is what to choose as a decent entry-level receiver. This is a fairly interesting read, if you put stock in 'professional' reviews. Compared are:

Denon 1804
JVC RS-8032VSX
Marantz SR4400
Onkyo TX-SR501
Sony STR-DB790

The Sony and Denon were rated highest, with the Sony described as "the most impressive amp in this round-up."

(This post was edited with the correct link information; thanks, Roland.)

Hmm that link seems rather off a bit... I had a hard time finding the review until I finally clicked on "Home" and found it on the "front page" of the website.

Try this link:

http://www.homecinemachoice.com/test...?reviewid=3695

[Note: Be advised Adobe Acrobat Reader is required to see the review! :) ]

That might work better, I think...

Also, Home Cinema Choice is a UK publication AFAIK so some model numbers may be a little different from NA models. For example the Sony STR-DB790 "QS" is the same as the NA STR-DA1000ES "ES" receiver with a few subtle differences.

Dang the liitle cheapo Onkyo came out really well...

I am surprised. But the two I recently installed, sound really great.
