Somebody stole the 2 CDs I ordered! I got an empty envelope in the mail! Ah!

I contacted the on-line seller and told them I had documented the incident of theft with:

[1] the U.S. National Postal Service,
[2] with my local U.S. Post Office,
[3] and with my local U.S. Postal Inspection Service, which will conduct a formal investigation.

Whew! At least it's on record now.

But... will my on-line seller send me replacements?!

I would think so, but if you simply can not wait - have you considered just downloading both CDs? [IMG]

    Michael,

If it was an online vendor, I would think they would replace it.

If it was an individual selling used or new CD's, like on Ebay or Amazon Marketplace, I would think they wouldn't have extra copies, and might balk at refunding.

Was the package insured? If not, I'm not sure if you'll be able to recoup if you bought from an individual.

I bought through an Amazon Marketplace seller. But the used-vendor company is Caiman, which I think does a lot of business through Amazon. So, maybe I'll get replacements?

I'm not sure if they insure. But thanks for reminding me to inquire about that!

I don't want to download the discs because the used price I got was pretty good, and better than any legal download. I'm a-scared to illegally download! I don't want to get disbarred!

Well technically you could declare through Amazon that you didn't receive the items, but not sure how that covers receiving an empty envelope.

I don't download primarily because I don't want the reduced resolution. 99% of my listening is done in a car with a premium sound system, and I can definitely hear the difference between MP3 upconverted to CD and a real CD.

    Too true about downloading, Andrew!

I have actually downloaded only a few things for myself, and always been disappointed. My buddy is in your primo car sound system situation, so I've never burned him anything except from a real CD.

I just download stuff for the kids. But neither they nor (certainly!) I care a hang if Usher [IMG] experiences reduced resolution.

I'm feeling less sneaky lately because somebody stole my damn mail and now I see that somebody stole my private email address and is trying to scam people with "paypal," whatever the hell that is.

I guess the general tenor of this thread is thievery, so you didn't spin off-bounds.

Even if that paypal thing was spam, I still reported it to the FTC.

FWIW (to the original poster) I've had 2 missing CD shipments from Buy.com and both were replaced no questions asked.

In today's day and age of ripping CDs, someone who actually reported this is probably not lying...

Caimen is okay for the first shipment, but trying to get additional customer service out of them is pointless. I made an inquiry to them asking whether what they were selling was a remaster or an older version, and I gave up trying after 6 replies that absolutely proved that they had never even read the question in the first place.

But thanks for the warning, Jeff.

Still, I may have to get all attorney-ish on them!

Was there any silica in the envelope? Perhaps they were just absorbed.

I think if you bake the silica at 325° the CD's will come out.
