This is on the 2nd layer on the bonus features side, which I guess what is causing the problem.

Both this documentary and the one before on the list are the only two on the 2nd layer and they are the ones I am having problems with.

Side 1 plays fine for me.

Side 2 freezes and breaks up during the documentary about the real CASINO at about the 22-23 minute mark.

Well I currently have mine on order from DDD (20% off sale) so I am hoping I get a good working version. Of course now I am expecting it to be problematic after reading this thread and the one at dvdtalk.

I finally got around to watching my copy, no problem with the layer change but it does freeze/get blocky at the very end of the movie when they show the senior citizens. ARGH!

I had problems on all players with first copy.
Retailer had it backordered after first week for 3 weeks, so I assume stock was being replaced.
New copy is fine.

I've had problems with side 2 on the documentaries (2) about the mob (I suspect this is after the layer change). Sounds like a common problem with this release. Not sure if sending Universal some feedback would result in a recall or perhaps a limited exchange policy...

Joel,

I wouldn't count on Universal exchanging the discs, but it's worth a try. Universal has a had a problem with nearly every title that they've released on DVD18, and hence the reason that I avoided this release. It angers me that they continue to release on this format, when they've shown virtually no ability to do so reliably.

Eric,

Can you remind of some other DVD18's. I must possess at least 1 or 2 of them and I don't recall any such problem in the past. Of course, it's possible I simply don't own any of their other DVD18's...

I watched the movie and all the extras and experienced no problems. I didn't bought mine on the 4th of July so it's possible that mine came from a later batch.

For starters, I personally had problems with Schindler's List, but there was also many reported problems with the Abbott & Costello sets, and several of the Monster Legacy sets. I'm sure there are others as well, and if I think of them, I'll be sure to post.

My original copies of "Schindler's List" and "Orgazmo" (how's that for a double-feature?) were both defective when first purchased but I was able to exchange the discs and they were fine the second time around.

My copy of Casino is freezing around 1:31:47 to 1:31:58.

Any word of replacement discs through Universal?

I doubt there will be any replacement. Your best bet is to take it back to where you bought it and try another copy. If it's after the return timeframe or you don't have the reciept, they'll probably still do an exchange for the same thing.

Just for the record...

I bought the Casino (Anniversary) from amazon.com in late Dec./05, just got around to playing it. It stutters and goes blocky intermittently between 1:32 and 1:36 on the first side, didn't try the second side. So it's not just the "first batch" that were flakey, I specifically waited hoping the problem might be straightened out. This is the first DVD-18 of many I have that has a playing problem.

This DVD-18 issue also came to mind yesterday when I was thinking of picking up the Dune EE... I'm wary.

I love bringing back old threads. I bought this just last year and played it tonight. Chapter 10 is unplayable on my Oppo 980 and an LG player. My Panasonic BD player plays it fine. Are there any other Universal DVD's out there with the same problem that I should avoid? I don't always watch them after buying.

Thanks,

Jeff

^ I'm the same way: I buy a title when opportunity or my interest strikes, and it may not get watched for quite a while. Well after the typical 30 day exchange period anyway.

The copy of Casino I referred to above was replaced by amazon even though it was past 30 days...I don't recall why. The new one worked perfectly.

So it's the luck of the draw on some of these. My first Casino did not play on any of my players, I have five. So let's say it was definitely the disc. The replacement had identical markings to the first, so it was the same "batch" etc.

Then there are players that are known to not handle DVD-18s very well. The Oppo isn't one of them, so in that case I'd say your disc is probably lousy, and anyway there weren't any BD players when it was released so you'd have said the same thing back then.

For just about every DVD-18 title you will find a bunch of people here who had trouble playing it. Usually a replacement (or several) will solve it. The Dune EE I mentioned: lots of people had trouble with that one, so check it out if you have it. Mine was fine... Another I recall a bunch of problems for was The Frighteners DC. Also some of the "franchise packs" (Airport, Smokey/Bandit, etc.). My DB doesn't record disc type so I'm having to rely on my poor memory...

Thanks for the info. The disc also works on my dad's Panasonic DVD player, from 2003. I guess I'll just have to live with it since I bought it way back in December 2007.
