Just wondering if there are any plans for studios to produce new SEs of Time Bandits or Life of Brian. I've been looking at these Criterion discs for a while, but I can see at least Brian getting a SE release along the lines of Holy Grail at some point. I'd like to own a decent SE of these films, but not necessarily at Criterion prices.

    The Criterion discs ARE SEs

Just try DVDPlanet, neither title is OOP, nor is it likely to be any time soon

I know that the criterion discs are SEs, but they're also $60 apiece here. I got Holy Grail for $24-a BIG difference. Sorry, but I just can't afford those discs at those prices.

If an studio/distributor licenses a title to Criterion...it usually means the originating company either does not want to do a "special edition" or does not have the resources to do so.

Thus, Criterion creates a "special edition" release for the originating company.

And hence, the somewhat higher price point.

If the titles do go out of print, I'd expect MGM to do the SE re-releases, being as LOB and TB were both Handmade Films productions (George Harrison R.I.P), and rights went to Orion on those, I believe.

    Sincerely,

John "Well, LOB had Orion markings on the Warner VHS pressing" Kilduff

Anchor bay Uk will release Time bandits in September.
    No idea of specs though.
They are currently trying to get the rights to Life of Brian.
At least that's what they told me.
    A short term effect
    A long term effect

hey JamieD, while not much cheaper, you could order from www.dvdboxoffice.com. the criterion life of brian is 50 bucks (cdn) there and they don't have shipping charges and are also a canadian website so you don't have to worry about duty or any of that other garbage....

The Pythons own their movies and the TV show, and since they have great fondness for Criterion, I don't see Life of Brian leaving their hands any time soon.

Same deal with Time Bandits, I'm doubting it will ever leave them

Anchor Bay has the non-SE rights to both films

Hmm-thought that there'd be a new Brian disc on the heels of the Holy Grail SE, which seemed to do pretty well.

No need to do a new BRIAN disc. The current one is amazingly amazing! If you love the movie, then the cost is well worth it. It's still cheaper than LD! [IMG]
