After weathering hurrican Frances and being without power for 5 days, I decided that a portable DVD player would be a great purchase. Any suggestions. I don't want to go smaller than a 7 inch screen. It doesn't have to be super good. It just needs a long battery life and enough durability to take some abuse from the kiddies.

I'm not trying to be sarcastic here...I'd buy a unit that fullfilled my needs for the least $$$. The kiddes will abuse it, and you'll have to purchase a new unit very quickly! If they are the primary source of viewing, I'm sure that the best PQ is not important.
I find, that with this technology changing so fast, I want what will work for now, give decent quality, and not be obsolete or broken in one year.
But that's just me.

One idea is to buy an old model laptop PC that has a DVD drive. You could probably get a used one for about $200-300 off ebay.

Pros: big screen, can do other things besides play DVDs
Cons: more things to break with sticky little fingers, may not give the battery life you want, bigger/heavier than the mini DVD players

the polaroid 0700 may be a decent choice. we sell a lot of these and they seem to stay out. i also got one for my sister. she seemed to like it well enough.

it's only 200 bucks, so if it breaks on ya, it's not like you lost your shirt.

ps, glad you weathered frances okay!
