    Very basic question.

Is there any difference in the resultant sound quality if, for example, you have a portable player connected to a receiver or car stereo via a headphone jack versus a dedicated line-out?

no difference they're both gonna be a lower level output than a regular CD player or other analog source that you would hook up to your stereo. The sound quality will be fine just quieter since most battery powered devices cannot produce as strong a signal going into a reciever or other source. I use my portable MD player on my stereo all the time through its headphone jack since it does not feature a dedicated line out jack. Really the only difference between headphone out and line out on a portable device is one has volume control.
