Aside from being a certain distance from a wall, brace or sub, and the end being a certain distance from a wall, etc..., does it matter where a port is placed. Should it be installed on the same plane as the subwoofer or can it be on any plane. I am considering a downfiring design (similar to the SVS), and by using a 4" port" I will most likely have the port facing down or out the top to meet the length requirements. Would it be better, in a downfire design, to have the port on one of the sides (front, right, or left) like the SVS' do? Thanks.

No, it doesn't really make a difference. Whatever satisfies best the other requirements you already mentioned as well as appearance.
