If you place your port on the side, top, or back, instead of directly facing the audience , will you lose SPL produced by the port when the subwoofer is used outside(no walls,etc nearby) , because it isnt facing you directly?

No.

Since the wavelengths at subwoofer frequences are much larger than any box dimension, output is omnidirectional. Put the port anywhere you like.
