If anyone is interested, DVD Empire has the title on its site, along with several other of Wicked's titles listed as "pre-release." They're not cheap though - $49.95 a piece, though Cuddly Pines is a four-disc set with the feature on HD DVD and three discs of extras on DVD. The HD transfer is also only 720p.
$50 a title and this is HD DVD's last hope? I don't think so.
Anyone have the sales numbers for the WMV HD discs, which seem to be the same titles that they are converting to HD DVD? Anyone with a computer could play those and they were cheaper than what the HD DVD version is currently priced at.
"There has been a lot of speculation lately on the electro-webs about the HD-DVD war currently brewing between HD-DVD and Blu-Ray.
The closest analogy is the '80s battle between VHS and Betamax. The conventional wisdom is that Beta lost that format war by refusing to allow pronographic movies on its tapes. So many feel that the format of choice among the pornography industry will decide the fate of next-gen DVD.
We caught up with director Robby D. at the Adult Entertainment Expo. Robby shoots first-rate pornography for high-end adult-movie company Digital Playground.
Here's what Mr. D. had to say about why his company is going HD-DVD and not Blu-Ray:"
Well, if Sony were adamant on blocking it why didn't they? He also said he expects disc sales to drop from 90% to 40% this year, so take from it what you will. I think it's more likely they'd rather give priority at the replication plants for all the BD mainstream titles first.
I think that interview just reinforces that porn won't decide this format war. It's definitely a prop for which ever format gets releases but hardly a format swayer. You could really tell that Vivid really wants to go with Blu-ray because of the PS3. That's their target audience right there but he couldn't exactly come out and say it.
I only ask because there are limited number of rep houses, and for Sony to shut one down, it would have a ripple effect of slowing down an already slow pipeline (like what happens when U.S. oil companies shut down a refinery).
