    Hi everyone,
I would like to get a feel for optimum viewing distances with various LCD/DLP front projectors. Optimum would mean a smooth picture without pixelization/screen door/visible video lines.

I'd like to suggest the following poll. Please share the following with the forum, (if you would, copy and paste the following and add your info). Obviously this will be very subjective, but the more of us that respond, the better idea we will all get.

    -start copy-

    Projector:
    Native Resolution of Projector:
Primary Source (eg, DVD, HD, NTSC, PAL?):
    16:9 Image Size (diagonal):
Optimum distance from screen to viewer:
Minimum distance from screen to viewer that you find comfortable:

Comments (eg what do you use to upconvert etc):

    -end copy-

    Background info:
There seems to be a lot of information out there about screen size, viewing angles, screen width and height. Ther are also some wonderful calculators to figure out where to put the porjector. I am struggling however to get a good grasp on the best possible eye-screen distance for various projectors and resolutions. For example: I know that NTSC is best at about 5-7 screen heights. I have also heard that 1.5 diagonal picture widths is good for HDTV. Well, where does DVD fall on a 16x9 front projector with enhancements like de-interlacing and conversion to higher resolutions? Do you change your sitting position depending on what source you are watching? Would you like to?

    much appreciated
    Andrew

    Projector: Sony VPL-VW11HT
    Native Resolution of Projector: 1366x768
Primary Source (eg, DVD, HD, NTSC, PAL?): DVD
    16:9 Image Size (diagonal): 96"
Optimum distance from screen to viewer: 12ft
Minimum distance from screen to viewer that you find comfortable: 8ft as field of view gets overpowered

Comments (eg what do you use to upconvert etc): Just using the progressive out from a JVC DVD player. HDef looks amazing in either 1080i or 720p.

    Projector: Sanyo PLV-Z1
Native Resolution of Projector: 16:9 (960x540)
Primary Source: 60% DVD, 30% NTSC, 10% HD
    16:9 Image Size (diagonal): 84"
Optimum distance from screen to viewer: 12'
Minimum distance from screen to viewer that you find comfortable: 7'

Comments - Use an older (2000) Sony DVD player, interlaced. I have never seen any interlacing artifacts, so as far as I am concerned, the Z1 does a great job of converting. The pixel structure is always visible at less than 6 feet, sometimes visible between 6-10 feet. I have no problem watching up close.

    I use a JVC XVFA90BK Progressive scan DVD-A/V Player.
Very very very slight defocus when viewing under 10 feet.
over ten feet, defocus not necessary. I think its 1.5 X screen width.

Thanks all, please keep the stats coming. We are collecting some good info. When we have enough, I'll tabulate the data and post so we can see them all side by side. There is the same thread over at avsforum and I will combine the results.

While the image is fantastic for the price, I am very susceptable to screendoor. Any bigger or closer and I can't watch comfortably. As it is with a slight defocus, I still can catch screendoor occasion and it is a bit distracting.

I did used to notice screen door when I first installed this after my PT-AE100 but now I hardly notice it at all even at 9'
