From Porcupine Tree's website:

I'm a huge fan of this band, so this is fantastic news for me. Of course, I'm not holding my breath on that release date.

This is good, but confusing news. It appears from the blurb on their website, which is also quoted above, that it is unclear whether this is a DVD-Audio disc or a DTS release only.

I am hoping that it is a DTS DVD-Audio disc, so that we also get a 96/24 DVD-Audio mix (in addition to the DTS mix the site speaks about).

PT is on Lava Records, which is distributed by Atlantic, so my guess is it'll be a Warner DVD-A. Not aware of any of their titles that have DTS tracks. Perhaps the site should say the disc should be playable on any Dolby Digital system.

I can't seem to post a topic without misspelling a word in the title. It's becoming a tradition for me. :)

Tons of Warner DVD-A discs have DTS tracks. Just glancing at my shelf I see Steely Dan, Yes, Donald Fagen, and R.E.M. - all releases on Warner labels, and all with DTS tracks.

As far as the Porcupine Tree disc goes, this press release sounds like they are talking about a DTS CD. That would surprise me a bit...but it wouldn't shock me.

I stand corrected. I didn't check any of my Warner titles. After looking, the Yes disc is the only one I have with a DTS track.

I sure hope this is a DVD-A, not just a DTS CD. I'm pretty sure that the announcement is just stressing that you'll be able to play the disc on most DVD players; in other words, the average PT fan won't have to go out and buy a new player.

Wow! This is one of my favorite records of last year or in recent years even. It also has fantastic production. If I didn't recently purchase a DVD-A player, I would for this one (assuming it will indeed be a DVD-A title).

My feelings as well Rob. Is it too much to assume with Elliot Scheiner mixing that it will indeed be a DVD-A release? I would bet on it myself. I'm drooling over hearing this one in hi-rez. I need more titles like this in DVD-A & SACD.

Btw I check the PT site every so often, but thanks for the heads up on this. :emoji_thumbsup:

More details from pt.com:

"As previously announced, a new surround sound mix of Porcupine Tree's In Absentia will be issued in February by DTS. Steven spent time in the USA in October and December to oversee the new version, which was mixed by multi-grammy award winning producer and surround specialist Elliot Scheiner.

The disc contains three versions of the album : (1) A high resolution audio surround version for playing on dedicated DVD-A players, (2) A standard resolution surround version which can be played on any DVD player with surround speakers connected, (3) A new master of the original stereo mix at higher resolution than is available on the existing CD.

The DVD-A also contains a wealth of bonus material, including video, photo galleries and three additional tracks mixed for surround : Drown With Me, Chloroform and Futile. This is the first time that Futile (recorded in January 2003 after the original album's completion) has been issued commercially in any form."

The last paragraph has me extremely excited; all three of those bonus tracks are great, but I only have them as mp3s. Looks like I'm going to have to hook my DVD-A player back up!

Finally, a really great DVDA with newer music on it than oldie classics.

This one will rival all DVDA's in its scope and power.

One of the best albums of 2003.

I hope this release exposes even more fans to this great band.

I think it came out in '02. :)

Well, what can I say- just when I was losing faith in DVD-A, they hit me with this one. Wow, really never saw it coming.

This album is just gorgeous and should be heard by any music fan. It doesn't belong to the "prog" crowd. The answer to all those rock fans who bitch about how there's no good new music anymore.

Unfortunately, my HT stuff is in storage. I may buy it anyway and use a friend's system to listen to the DTS.

Mike, there's no excuse for not having a 5.1 system, not when you can buy this. :) Kind of sounds like a glorified boombox to me, but hey for 89 clams.........

To anybody: Seriously though, systems like this from $90 to $300 are ones that I see being bought by many, many people. This didn't take any sophisticated survey methods: at Best Buy before Christmas, they literally had piles of these types of HTiBs sitting on the floor.....now they are gone. Even the $300-800 HTiBs (Samsung, Panny, Yamaha, etc) were almost completely sold out. And I saw this happen last year too. Though I'm hoping they are just using them to try the surround waters so to speak, because I still see few people in the audio separates section of any store, up to (and beyond) quality levels like Tweeter.

I would love to be able to spend thousands of dollars on a surround system, but as a husband and father, I know I won't be able do it.

If I am able to get my wife to let me spend $300 on a system, I'll be lucky. She still can't believe I spent $100 more than I had to last year to get a dvd player that plays dvd-audio. We all have to balance this stuff, and for many $100 on a system is a lot of money, and they probably don't know what they are missing as far as sound quality anyway. It has been posted recently in other threads, most people get an RF modulator so they can hook their dvd player up to the the cable connection on their tv, so spending $100 on a surround system would be crazy to them.

PT has a preview of the DVD-A on their website:

link

Quicktime format.

Unless the video is from some of the video content on the disc, this doesn't tell us much, but if nothing else, maybe it means the 2/17 date will stay firm.

Postponed, can you believe it? A DVD-A postponed??!?!

Anyway, from PT.com:

"Correction to the release date for the surround sound version of In Absentia: The DVD-A will now be issued simultaneously in the US and Europe on 9th March. "
