This is only useful for those who run a HTPC and/or at least would rip their own media to stream on their home LAN, right?

I generally have no desire to rip video discs, but might be nice to have a good way to (better) manage music streaming around the house... though not sure it's worth $90 to me...

Currently, I still just rip CDs w/ iTunes on Windows PC and store the ALAC versions on a networked RAID storage.

Plex doesn’t require a paid license in order to be functional - it just provides advanced features and supports the developers who put time into it. My advice would be, if you’ve never used it, try it first when needed. It’ll be fully functional. If you decide you use it enough to want to support it, you can buy a pass then.
