My brother just saw on TV that they're making a sequel to Gladiator. One of the entertainment shows. This has got to be the dumbest thing I've ever heard of in my life. If there was ever a movie that screamed no sequel, this one it is.

Well, just reporting what he told me. Hopefully one of the sites will post the news. Hopefully, the film will never end up getting completed.

I remember about a year ago there was a lot of talk about Dreamworks trying to get a Gladiator prequel put together that details Maximus' triumphs as a Roman warrior. Perhaps they are going ahead with that idea? Of course, Russell Crowe would have to be willing to reprise the role if they did that. Personally, I hope it never happens as any sequel/prequel will inevitably be inferior and would only cheapen the original.

I would say that I see Crowe as the sort of actor that at this point in his career is far too serious about things to want to revisit that, or any of his roles.

He strikes me as a person looking for the next challenge. Jerk or not, he clearly seems very focused on acting challenges right now.

I saw that on TV also, and they mentioned the Crowe would not be envolved.

Crowe said that he was not interested. God this is stupid.

Extremely lame idea. Seriously, when will studios get it? It's making me sick.

A Gladiator sequel/prequel with Crowe would be bad enough, but without him the idea is just completely idiotic. If this happens it will just be sad, sad, sad.

I liked the first as a popcorn flick...but a sequel would just be stupid.

You guys are missing the point. Hollywood doesn't care how stupid an idea is-if it has the potential to make money, they'll get it made. But, seeing that it's low risk, I would think Hollywood would pass on it since Hollywood just loves risky films. [IMG] Other than that, I agree...this is dumb and it won't get my money.

Well if its a prequel they can't exactly call it Gladiator 2 can they? [IMG]
I remember when I first heard about this a year or so ago, bad idea even if I didn't really like the first one. I just don't see Russell Crowe signing on to do another, like him or not you can't really have another Gladiator film especially a prequel without him.

This does suck. I was expecting a sequel to the boxing movie starring Cuba Gooding Jr.

Let me see...if it's a prequel without Crowe wouldn't it be just another movie set in Roman times, one that happens to be about gladiators and/or the Roman Army?

If they want to make another movie set in that time period I'm all for it. Bring me more battle scenes.

If they want to make another movie with a contrived connection to Gladiator for marketing purposes then that's beyond stupid.

I'm very happy that Crowe isn't interested.

Very dumb idea. I really liked Gladiator although Crouching Tiger should have won Best Picture...But Pleeeeeeeze don't give us a sequel or prequel.

I agree. Maybe if they also offer Russell a bit more money, maybe he might sign on. [IMG] Oh, and keep Ridley Scott far away from the project as possible. *ducks* [IMG]

Part of the reason Gladiator was good is because of Ridley's stylistic techniques. The film goes slightly higher than the average popcorn flick due to it's cinematography and overall look. If Ridley and Crowe were involved, I'd be fine with it, but since neither are, I'm against this awful idea.
